Want to join the sustainability revolution? Whisk yourselves away to Wildspirit Eco Cultural Farm, tucked into hills above Valencia’s Costa del Azahar and 20 minutes’ drive from Vilanova d’Alcolea. Here you can sleep in a semi-furnished bell tent in the grounds of a carefully restored traditional stone farmhouse, and learn about the journey of the site owners, whose aim is to farm the land in a biodynamic fashion.
The tent itself is set on wooden decking raised up off the ground on stone pillars – all the better to capture the views down to the Mediterranean coast – and there are shared shower and toilet facilities in the property’s main house. Alternatively, you can brave the outdoor shower, lined with bamboo and palm fronds to protect your modesty.
By day, you can snooze in a hammock, read a good book or soak up those spectacular views to the Med across farmland and vines. Meet up with like-minded folk in the covered communal barbecue area, and after dark, cosy up together under twinkling stars.
While you’re on site, you can also make friends with all the animals (cats and chicks just for starters), practice yoga, join in a guitar jam or perhaps simply immerse yourself in the spectacular sunsets seen on clear nights.

Far removed from 21st-century bustle it may be, but Wildspirit Eco Cultural Farm is actually only 15 minutes’ drive along reliable roads to the Mediterranean coastline, where you have the choice of several beaches, from the quiet pebbles at Platja la Ribera de Cabanes (half an hour’s drive) to the popular sands at Torrenostra (25 minutes), backed by brightly painted beach cabins, palm trees and a scattering of cafés.
When you’re chasing bright lights after dark, Benicàssim (half an hour) has lots of waterfront restaurants and bars. If you’d rather stay away from the busy Med resorts altogether, spend some time exploring your environs on foot or by bike, with a myriad of routes heading up into the hills to viewpoints like Subarra (90 minutes on foot/25 minutes by bike) for views back down to the sea.
You can also find stunning medieval villages to explore. Alcalá de Xivert (half an hour’s drive) has a hilltop castle and ornate cathedral to have a look around, and the hilltop white village of Vilafamés (35 minutes) is a photogenic jumble of tiny alleys leading up to a well-restored castle.
