It is a fact universally acknowledged that lazily floating along on a French river, via kayak, under a warm Provence sun is a topping way to spend any holiday. And then, perhaps, an amble back to your campsite for a siesta under the trees – and a lounge on the site's own beach while you leisurely plan the next day's activities around the Ardèche gorges...?
Have this and (a lot) more at waterfront site Camping Universal, on the banks of the Gardon river, with its own beach and with kayak hire nearby. It covers four green tree-shaded hectares near Rochegude in the Gard, a few kilometres from the canyoning, mountain biking, hiking, caving and heaps more of the Gorges du Gardon Biosphere Reserve.
If you're not basking on the beach or snoozing under the trees, have at it at the regular activities arranged by the Universal team: regular sports tournaments are arranged in summer as well as theme nights, parties and gigs.
The site also has a pool to make a splash at, a games room, and ping pong and pool tables, along with modern amenities including a toilet block with hot showers, a launderette and a parent and baby washroom.
There's a food shop for essentials and barbecues are allowed, but another fact universally acknowledged is that one shouldn't do too much cooking while on hol. So do avail of the site restaurant, snack bar and takeaway, or thoroughly investigate the Provence markets nearby in Rochegude and other villages like Tharaux, Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan, Rivières, Saint-Denis and Méjannes-le-Clap.

If you're an outdoorsy and active sort, you're sorted: a few kilometres from Camping Universal is the UNESCO-listed Gorges du Gardon Biosphere Reserve for long days hiking, canyoning, tree climbing, caving, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting, horse riding and yet more lazy kayaking. (And all in stunning surroundings, natch: have a look at the site pics.)
This is ancient as well as splendidly scenic land, so dig into some Provence heritage in the surroundings too, like at the must-see Pont du Gard, built by those roaming Romans around 19BC and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Pont d'Arc over the Gardon river, yet another top kayaking spot, and yes, you should pretend you're on a Tolkienesque quest as you float under it…
Another must for ancient sights is the Gard department capital of Nîmes, to see its famed amphitheatre, the best preserved in France and still used these days for gigs; its cathedral, probably built on the site of the temple of Augustus, and the eighteenth century Jardins de la Fontaine, built around the remains of the city's Roman baths.
