Dagger Wood Campsite

Mi è piaciuto: We had a top quality stay at Dagger Wood over the Easter weekend! Perfect for that secluded wild camping feel, with the bonus of toilet and wash facilities on site. Henry even threw in a free bag of kindling as there was a little wait on the logs I'd purchased 😎 Plenty of wood for a 4 hour fire each evening! We also walked along the old railway line into the local villages and enjoyed some drinks at the Temple, and Railway Inn before heading back to camp. Highly recommend if traditional woodland camping is your thing! We'll be staying again 🏕️

Mi è piaciuto: Remoteness of pitches. Nice quiet site. Clean and tidy.

Non mi è piaciuto: No hot water but it did say that in advance, I just didn't notice so not marked down!

Mi è piaciuto: It's like wild camping but with the permission of a friendly and helpful landowner (Henry) and an easy way to pay to say thank you. Wish there were more places like this.
Plus you can buy logs so you can make a fire easily and in places the land owner is happy with.

Non mi è piaciuto: Not much. The pitch we were on suffered from constant noise from the busy A37. Easily sorted with ear plugs, but be aware in case this is an issue for you.

Mi è piaciuto: The campsite was absolutely beautiful and had a real off-grid feel — exactly what we were hoping for. There are compost toilets dotted around the site and drinking water taps within easy reach. There were plenty of pitches to choose from, and the kids loved having the freedom to explore for hours on end — it felt like a proper little adventure for them.

Henry, the campsite manager, was brilliant — super friendly and full of knowledge. He took us on a foraging walk around the site where we learned to identify all sorts of edible plants (and got to taste them too!). Our favourite was the common marrow, which surprisingly tastes a bit like apple skin — that was definitely a highlight of the trip and such a memorable experience.

Non mi è piaciuto: If you want kindling & logs supplied to you it's quite pricey due to an increase in costs from the sites sustainable log supplier. (Nets of logs £13.00 and kindling for £10.00).

Mi è piaciuto: A nice place, simple and cheap. They have good basic amenities and the freedom to choose your pitch.

Mi è piaciuto: The secret I want to keep!!

This is one of my favourite sites, 6 miles outside of Bristol, nestled in the countryside surrounded by woods and open fields. You will not want to leave.

Facilities are basic (compost toilets and cold water taps), but are always clean and perfect for that 'wild camping' experience.

40 minute walk to the pub (Hunters Rest - recommended), or 20 minutes to the Railway Arms, both accessible on foot along the disused railway line running through the site, or a short drive by car.

Open fires are permitted and logs are available to buy, along with fresh eggs and even a secondhand bookshop, all managed by Henry, who is an outstanding host.

Wildlife and birdlife are aplenty - don't be surprised to wake up to a cacophony of birdsong, be woken by the delight of tawny and little owls at night, or have the surprise of having pheasants and squirrels visit your camp, oh, and there's plenty of deer around (both fallow and muntjac)

Mi è piaciuto: Beautiful site with a very wild camping feel to it. Lots of privacy with the pitches secluded and well spaced out. We did the air rifle shooting which was very well run with a great standard of instruction and equipment.

Mi è piaciuto: Hands-off type of site, plenty of room between pitches, quiet. It's perfect for that 'wild camping' feel, but with the luxury of water and loos! Pitches are looked after, but not in the boring normal campsite style, it's a bit more real.

Mi è piaciuto: The variety of pitches, the relaxed vibe, the compost toilets with loads of roll (but might be different on a busy weekend), instructions on how to get to the nearest pub via the woods and fields!

Mi è piaciuto: There's a lot of pitches to choose from and many feel very secluded while still being a short walk back to the carpark.
The foraging course was amazing. My 11 year old son and I loved it, and then had a nice side of mushrooms and burdock root for breakfast on our last morning and nettle soup at home later in the week!
