Tips on caravan gas supplies for winter

Nov 21 2012 A bejegyzés szerzője: Laura Canning

Keeping cosy and being able to cook are both essential parts of winter caravan holidays, so it’s vital to ensure you’re using the right type of gas for your heater and cooker.

But this takes on even more importance in the winter months, when standard butane gas can be less effective if temperatures drop to below freezing.

Insurance firm Towergate has released a guide for caravanners on changing their gas supply for winter, and on how to make sure you’re using the most efficient product.

The guide covers the differences between butane and propane gas, the advantages and disadvantages of both, and how to make the switch from one type to another.

Both butane and propane burn at around the same temperature, but propane is more effective in very cold weather, so caravanners are advised to either switch to propane for winter trips or to take a propane supply as back-up if the butane fails. It’s also possible to use a mixture of the two.

You should also check that your van regulator can handle both types of gas, as in some older models regulators are set up for only one.

Finally, if in doubt or if you need any help, find a caravan dealer on the Gas Safe register, the guide advises.
