Now this is vintage – 1920s caravan sells at auction for £11,500

Our caravan envy is kicking in again today, with the news of a 1920s Bertram Hutchings Voyageur caravan recently sold at auction by Bonhams. It went for £11,500, which was double the original estimate but which we still think is a bargain given the lovely vintageness of it and the fact that it could once have been pulled by a Rolls Royce. Now that’s definitely glamping.

Caravans in those days were mainly reserved for the aristocracy, for obvious reasons of price and because the rich were the only people who actually had time to holiday instead of working. The Voyageur was part of the first generation of caravans that replaced horse drawn coaches, and was full of luxury inside, with a gramophone, stove, gas lighting, oak furniture, curtained-off loo, sofa bed and artificial leather walls on the outside. Only two berth, though, which means the chauffeur that would have likely come along on the trip would have had to sleep on the back seat of the car.)

The caravan would have cost around £245 at the time it was built, and there are thought to be fewer than a hundred of them left in the country. Get checking your garages.
