Porlock Vale Campsite

A aimé We stayed at Porlock Vale for three nights in September, and had a lovely time. The campsite was so peaceful and picturesque, with views of the sea and the Exmoor ponies, and sights and sounds of the local birds. The campsite had all the amenities we needed for our stay, including a fire pit to rent. On our arrival we were greeted by Rosie, Dawn’s dog on the first day who was a delight. Dawn was an excellent host, brilliant communication before and whilst we were there. We were lucky to hear all about her work with her ponies, which made the stay even more special. We will definitely be back again.

A aimé We absolutely loved our stay - me, my partner and our dog. So much room, beautiful views and a field next door for Reggie to run in. Washing up facilities and loos were kept spotless, and Dawn delivered a fire pit and wood as soon as we asked. It was a proper break from "real life" - would absolutely recommend.

A aimé Peaceful, beautiful setting. Great access to loads of footpaths from the campsite for good walking. Short drive to coastal path walks.

N'a pas aimé There isn't a lot of flat ground at the site, but the gentle slope is fine for a tent and can be overcome with the use of chocks on a van.

A aimé Really lovely quiet camp site in Porlock Vale. Liked the off grid nature of the amenities, showers warm.
Host Dawn very welcoming and knowledgeable about most things local and beyond. Will definitely return 👍🏻

A aimé Love this site so so much I keep coming back, the facilities are just what you need, clean and well maintained, loads of space even when fully booked, this place is very healing for the soul. As a solo female camper I feel totally safe. Dawn, the host, comes by to check on everyone a couple of times a day and is always at the end of a message if anything needs addressing. I cannot fault a single thing. The most beautiful setting, nothing but wildlife, stunning views and calm. I could spend every camping trip here. Dawn has got things spot on and I'm so grateful to have found this spot in paradise. Can't wait to return.

Réponse du gestionnaire : Hi David, thanks for your review. A couple of things. This is an off grid campsite, so no Wi-Fi. However, PitchUp only offer campsite owners a tick box for Wi-Fi and no option to indicate if campers can access the internet through 4G or 5G. Most of our campers are delighted to be able to get online from the field - and reception depends on the network they are on.
This is promoted as a peaceful campsite to come and chill, relax and enjoy nature, wildlife and endless walking and cycling in our spectacularly beautiful area of Exmoor. It's not advertised as having an activities programme on site. The off-grid facilities are comfortable (warm showers and washing up, flushing loos with cloakroom areas, etc) and are specifically designed to have low environmental impact, in line with our Greener Camping ethos and certification, and the land regeneration scheme here on the farm.

N'a pas aimé Details, but solar lights in facilities were unreliable and no windows so weeing/showering in gloom happened.

So, if you're having any issues, like you mention the solar light - just tell me so we can fix it. This is the first I've heard of it and they're checked every day - so I'd much prefer a text or mention, than read it on here, if possible. Thank you anyway and so glad you enjoyed your stay.

A aimé Quite possibly the most scenic and peaceful camp site we’ve stayed at. Amazing stargazing and bird watching with beautiful villages all around with exceptional tea rooms.

Lots of space, limited number of pitches so you aren’t too close to any neighbouring pitches tents/camper vans.

Never had to queue for a hot shower so that was a big bonus as we’d pitched at the furthest distance from the kitchen/loo block.

We’d love to come back. Didn’t actually want to leave

Pointers:

Take a torch/headtorch to the bathroom as fellow campers tended to leave the solar lights on and they’d run down (the cubicles are windowless so even in the day, that would be pitch black). Same with taking some loo roll, as it did seem to disappear quickly - so take a back up supply so you aren’t caught out.

N'a pas aimé As the site reached full capacity, the queue at the loos in the morning did require a bit of a wait - but not too bad.

There are two loo cubicles and a composting loo which is to be used as a last resort.

We do ask everyone to switch off the solar lights when finished - and thankfully nearly everyone does. In addition, there are also battery lights on cords which click on and off, in every area as a back up. So there's always light available. And we strongly recommend anyone visiting an off grid campsite brings their own torches, too.

A aimé Absolutely loved this little gem. Amazing view, beautiful walks. Dawn was so welcoming. Basic facilities but perfectly adequate. Might get a bit busy if all 15 pitches were needing them. There are two loos, one women's, one men's and an extra compost loo and two showers. Such a peaceful spot. We'll be back.

Our quest is to provide a beautiful campsite, where campers can enjoy peaceful, spacious pitches with stunning scenery all around - and have minimal environmental impact. The comfortable and well-tended off-grid facilities are designed with this in mind - and provide a warm water washing up area, two warm showers, two flushing loos and a compost loo. The small number of pitches (just 15 in a 9 acre field) ensure that everyone can enjoy space, quiet and comfort, while we continue to evolve species rich grassland and respect nature.
