Long famed as a sword-making centre, Toledo (50 minutes’ drive) sits on a hill overlooking the river Tagus. The highest point in the city is the Alcázar, an imposing fortress anchored at each corner by a spired turret. Museums in and around the Alcázar explore the history of the Spanish armed forces and the artworks of the painter El Greco. On the outskirts of Toledo, Puy du Fou España (one hour) is an amusement park with a difference: instead of thrill rides, you get immersive experiences into the history of Spain, with shows such as birds of prey displays and jousting tournaments, plus a night-time extravaganza full of special effects. Built in the 16th century by King Philip II, the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (one hour and five minutes) is said to be the world’s largest Renaissance building. It is certainly humongous, containing within its walls more than just a royal palace and a pantheon, but also a university, a monastery and a library (among other things).
