Laze lakeside in Lombardy by one of northern Italy’s finest bodies of water with a break at Belvedere Clusane Camping, a family-friendly park with a splendid swimming pool overlooking the surrounding mountains.
This site is on the shores of Lake Iseo, a 10-minute drive from the centres of Iseo and Sarnico, and is a doddle to reach as it flanks a cycle path.
Should you be spending your sojourn in Italy indulging in the local fare rather than speeding around in lycra, the park has that covered with an on-site restaurant facing the water and leading out to a lakeside terrace. Pizza should, of course, be on the menu during the hol, so scarf down a slice or two accompanied by an aperitif from the bar before catching some of the events and shows organised at the park (usually in the summer months).
The eatery also serves up some smashing fish dishes, like oven-baked tench with polenta, steamed fillet of char and marinated salmon trout carpaccio.
But how about the non-gastronomic ways to while away your time during the trip? It’s genuinely tricky to tear yourself away from the restaurant and swimming pool here, set above the lake with lush water and mountain views. But if you can bear it, touring the Brescia area is all about the natural attractions: think fishing by the banks of the lake, taking boat trips to an island and navigating your way around wildlife-rich reserves.

Days out are dreamy hereabouts. Kick off explores with a boat trip the island of Mont Isola in the middle of Lake Iseo from Sulzano (15 minutes’ drive) before retreating back near the park for a roam around the Natural Reserve Sebino (10 minutes) with its series of hiking trails, spectacular water views and chances for birdwatching.
Fancy mixing things up? Flock to Franciacorta Outlet Village (15 minutes) and browse for bargains at the 160 shops here before detouring to a couple of the local wineries for a taste of vino at La Montina Franciacorta (20 minutes).
If you’re intrigued by Italian architecture, add some town times to the itinerary as well: the smaller settlements of Sarnico and Iseo (10 minutes’ drive) are close by, while the cities of Brescia (half an hour) and Bergamo (35 minutes) are definitely worth a look.
Bambinos not interested in strolling around buildings? A session at Acquasplash Franciacorta (10 minutes) is a good shout instead.
