Fishing in nearby Loch Calder (five minutes' drive) is popular with anglers, and there's also the possibility of fishing in Loch Watten (20 minutes) or salmon fishing in the Thurso river (from 10 minutes), subject to the right permits being in place beforehand. There is also birdwatching here all year round, with areas like Puffin Cove (35 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (45 minutes) both very popular options. There are excellent beaches to visit around Thurso (15 minutes), the northernmost town on the British mainland, and you're also within easy driving distance of John o' Groats (40 minutes). The busy port of Scrabster (20 minutes) is close by too, with the ferry crossing over to Stromness on Orkney taking roughly an hour and a half. If you're partial to a tipple, the site owners recommend the Pulteney Distillery in Wick (35 minutes), another scenic town where there are sandy beaches, two historic castles and boat trips that can take you out into the wilds of the North Sea.
