Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings – and take note again, the pub is closed on Monday and Tuesdays), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast National Landscape, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day, you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

Cabaña pod

Me gustó Wow, what a great little capsite. The Camping pod was lovely, and heated prior to arrival which was a nice little touch. The shower and toilet where all nice and clean. Really was nothing to complain about. I was just shocked that we had the entire site to ourselves.

The site is at the rear of the pub, which is where me and my partner headed for our evening meal. Booking is highly recommended as it does get busy. After a look at the menu we both settled on the steak. And what a steak it was. Perfectly cooked, and a huge portion of chips and freshly made onion rings. Luckily saved space for the deserts as well.

The staff onsite and in the pub are polite and friendly, and all happy to help if needed. If you have children, there is a play park just opposite the site entrance.

Already planning on returning again next year.

Me gustó We loved the whole stay! Beautiful site in a lovely working farm village. 10 min walk to the sea, good play area for the kids, clean facilities and fab food and drink in the pub. Staff were all chatty and helpful. Definitely recommended.

Me gustó The location was close to the coast and Ideal for travel to the lakes. The Lowther Arms pub was perfect right beside the campsite. Staff were very friendly and helpful

No me gustó Only problem was the toilet and shower gets busy when the campsite gets full and often had to wait . But when the pub is open the toilets are available

Me gustó Spacious pitches, quiet, dark skies (wonderful for star gazing), amazing staff who are super friendly, pub and the food is wonderful, short walk to the beach. Well maintained site and facilities which is private for the site users. Dog and child friendly site, free WiFi.

No me gustó Not enough facilities if it was full. Just 1 shower which is in the same room as the toilet and the sink to wash dishes, 1 extra separate toilet. No separate washing up area.

Me gustó This is an outstanding campsite. Having toured for years in our van I can honestly say I have never been anywhere as tidy or clean! The attention to detail is explemary. Hosts amazing. Superb little spot on the soloway coast. Food exceptional. Gluten free fish and chips an absolute must!

No me gustó There was nothing to dislike. Some people pass comment on waiting for shower and toilets however this is a small site with adequate facilities. There were 4 of us in August and none of us had to wait.

Me gustó The peace, quiet and sunshine made our stay very enjoyable ..we had the bonus of the pub open on the Sunday where we ate and it was by far the best pub food we've had in a good while. Very friendly and would definitely stay again..

No me gustó Wasn't a huge issue but only 1 shower and when there's a few adults timing is needed..

Me gustó We stayed for a night here, the pub was closed on the Monday (sadly, as it looked like a lovely place) but we were meet warmly and were made to feel very welcome. The shower room was lovely, one of the best we have had. Really cute place. We had our older child with us but for younger children there is a playground right outside. We had a nice windy walk along the beach.

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, why not make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour)? In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
