- Popular family site overlooking the Nguse River in Western Uganda
- Kibale and Murchison Falls national parks around two hours’ drive
- Restaurant and guided walks in the Bugoma Forest Reserve available
A popular stopover about two hours’ drive from Murchison Falls National Park, Nguse River Camp is 20 minutes from Kisaru in Western Uganda, set in a clearing in Bugoma Forest and (not surprisingly) bordering the Nguse River. There are dramatic jungle views from all around the site, as well as a backdrop of forested hills.
The action here revolves around the restaurant, where tempting meals and hot or cold drinks are served up on a terrace overlooking the river. Occasionally site staff hold barbecue evenings where guests can get together and chat about their daytime adventures – the options include chimpanzee trekking in Bugoma Forest or guided nature walks along the river banks.
Simple amenities include a back-to-basics but fully accessible shower block, mountain-bike hire for forays into the foothills and free parking. It’s easily accessible too; you can find this little piece of Ugandan paradise just off the main Kyenjojo–Holma Road.

Local attractions
If you sign up for a guided walk into the Bugoma Forest Reserve from your accommodation, chances are you may get to see a rich array of primates, from baboons to red-tailed monkeys and chimpanzees. More than 200 bird species call this reserve home, and there are also frequent sightings of elephants and jackals in the thick jungle surrounding the site.
Nature walks can be organised into the swamp plains of the Nguse River, where you can learn about indigenous fish and see how local residents catch their food. Just to the south of the site are the Nguse River Falls (five minutes’ drive to a lay-by and then 20 minutes’ walk).
Wildlife reserves around two hours’ drive of the site include Kibale National Park, where chimps are also often spotted, and Murchison Falls National Park, with its dramatic waterfall and rare wildlife grazing on the grasslands. Nguse River Camp is also an easy break to make on your journey south into Queen Elizabeth National Park (four hours) for safaris in search of elephants, leopards and antelopes.
