Ready for a real adventure? Pack up and head out to the Waterberg Biosphere for a true bush camping experience at Elevated Valley View Campsite, in an incredibly scenic Limpopo location about two hours’ drive from Pretoria. This is wild camping at its very wildest – there are no toilets, there’s no bar, and there’s no kitchen, so you’ll need to be entirely self sufficient when staying here. The trade-off, of course, comes in the form of magnificent mountain views by day, stunning starry skies at night – and the chance to spot some of the area’s renowned wildlife. The campground is near the Kamonande Game Park, which is home to several plains game species including kudu, sable, wildebeest, zebra, impala and waterbuck as well as a wide variety of birdlife. Some of it may well come to you, but you can also increase your chances of interesting sightings by heading out on a hike or a drive through the grounds (you’ll need a four wheel drive for the latter). There’s plenty of space on your pitch, so set it up as you wish and get set for alfresco evenings by stocking up on food and drinks at the supermarket 15 minutes’ drive away. There are more shops, plus fuel stations and places to eat, in Vaalwater, 20 minutes’ drive away. And if you do find that you need a little more luxury, you can request to use the facilities at the neighbouring mountain retreat, which has a braai area and an outdoor pool.

Group bookings of 2 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
Bookings must not be for more than 5 consecutive nights.
Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.
There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

A 4x4 vehicle is recommended as the access to the site is rocky. Not suitable for low-profile cars.

Local attractions

The main draw of this site is that you don’t have to go anywhere for entertainment – the animals are right there in your surroundings. They are, however, wild – so you may or may not be lucky with the sightings you want. Welgevonden Game Reserve (35 minutes’ drive) is worth a try if your wild neighbours aren’t putting in an appearance. To maximise your chances and see some of the area’s bigger animals too, head to one of the local wildlife parks such as Jugomaro Predator Park (25 minutes), The Cheetah Experience (45 minutes) or Adventures With Elephants (an hour). For a different kind of thrill, check out the adventures on offer at Waterberg Zipline Adventures (50 minutes). If that’s not your style, try a gentler outing to Koro Creek Golf Estate (half an hour) or book in at one of the area’s spas.
