  • Back-to-basics site next to Selah surfing beach in the Eastern Cape
  • Kap River Conservancy 15 minutes’ drive; Addo Elephant Park two hours
  • Tame animals on site; surfing lessons and board hire on the beach
You couldn’t get any closer to the ocean without actually being in it when you stay at Beach Farm Camping, just edging Selah surfing beach in the Eastern Cape. It’s surprisingly easy to get to as well, being right off the main R72 coastal road between Gqeberha (PE) and East London, and 25 minutes’ drive north of Port Alfred. Access to the site is through a securely locked gate, and then a short drive over a private track to the grass stands – which you will share with the farm’s resident animals, including horses, donkeys and goats. They’re all very tame and love a bit of fuss. Facilities are pretty simple – a composting toilet and washing machine – and there is no drinking water and no showers on site. Still, the camping field is less than 200 metres from the beach, a sweeping crescent of soft sand known for its reliable surfing waves, and that more than compensates for the basic amenities. Barbecues are allowed on site (you’ll need to bring your own gear), and if you want to stock up on groceries, Port Alfred is the place to go for shops and supermarkets. There’s also a laidback beach restaurant about 20 minutes’ walk away, where you can watch surfers catching the waves as you eat.

Local attractions

You don’t have to move very far to take surf lessons – they’re available just down on the beach 200 metres away, where you can also hire boards, go horse riding in the waves and join pilates or yoga classes on the sands. You can often see shy impala in Kap River Conservancy (15 minutes’ drive), where you may also like to paddle along the namesake river by canoe, or climb up to observation decks for far-reaching views over unspoilt forest. For more stunning vistas, this time over the Indian Ocean, head for Great Fish Point (25 minutes), where you can clamber to the top of the landmark lighthouse dating from 1868. Within about two hours’ drive, you can join night-time safaris to (hopefully) catch sight of elephant herds in Addo Elephant National Park, where endangered black rhinos are also occasionally spotted. About 2.5 hours away is Algoa Bay, where you might get lucky and tick penguins, dolphins and several species of whale off your bucket list.
