Picture Montenegro, on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea; next, zoom in on its southernmost tip, close to the border with Albania. Now, isn’t that a pretty sweet spot for a beach holiday? That’s where Greenfield Campsite sits, in a quiet tree- and shrub-covered spot between the R17 road (which takes you to the town of Ulcinj in about 15 minutes by car) and a long, sandy beach.
The site is in a quiet, peaceful and cosy part of Ulcinj municipality, 550 metres from Long Beach along a shaded country path where you might pick and taste wild blackberries for a little snack, or spot turtles. When you get to the beach, you can dive straight into the calm blue waters of the Adriatic for a swim (or take a kayak excursion, if you prefer).
But back to the site, which is well-lit and has level grassy pitches among tall trees, a modern amenities block with clean toilets and showers, barbecue facilities, a charging facility for electric cars, a fresh water supply and wastewater disposal. There’s also plenty of space on site for kids to run around in and play with the family dog; if the children demand structures – like swings or maybe soccer goals, for example – there is also a play area on site. Cafés, grocery stores and fruit stands can all be reached within a 10-minute drive.
And when you fancy a hike… see that mountain in the distance? That’s Mount Rumija (an hour’s drive). Interesting fact: climbing the 1,594 metres to the top of Rumija means you get rewarded with double panoramic vistas: of the Adriatic (to the west) and Lake Skadar (to the east).

Liked A newly opened site. The owners are friendly and extremely helpful. New hot and powerful showers, immaculate facilities and good electric power. Bakers and supermarket at entrance to site. Restaurants within walking distance. Private road leading to nice beach area avoiding the busy traffic. Would stay again

Local attractions
Surrounded by imposing stone walls, the Old Town of Ulcinj (20 minutes’ drive) sits on a rocky spur jutting into the Adriatic. Lose yourself among its narrow alleyways, climbing steps and finding Instagrammable spots at most turns, as you look for sea views, or for sites such as the museum, with exhibits dating as far back as the Bronze Age.
Solana Ulcinj (20 minutes) is a former saltworks turned into an area of great biodiversity. Its nutrient-rich waters now attract more than 250 species of bird, including pelicans, elegant flamingos and long-legged stilts.
Cross the border into Albania and visit Shkodër (one hour), taking in the remains of historic Rozafa Castle en route. In the city, stop by the Ebu Bekr Mosque, with its slender twin minarets, before checking out the artisanal handicrafts on display at the Shkodër History Museum.
