Thanks to its place on Italy’s boot-shaped peninsula, Calabria is called the toe of the country… and it's a splendid place to dip your toes into what's on offer around here (spoiler alert: rather a lot). Make your base Camping Ulisse to venture around this gorgeous part of Italian coast in a scenic and shaded setting: it's set behind a little pine forest where the pines mingle with the salty breeze to create a heady scent and the trees make for a site covered in shaded patches. All that and it's a few minutes' walk from the beach: bellissima, no? This welcoming spot is bursting with benefits for a family stay: there are daily activities (for all ages) in the summer months, and a pool if you’re more of a sit-and-soak sort. For eats and drinks, amble over to the on-site bar, or stock up on supplies at the mini supermarket. There are bigger shops five minutes’ drive away in Lamezia; head up or down the coast a similar distance and you’ll find plentiful beachside spots for supping, snacking and sunset watching. Further off, but worth the trip, Pizzo Calabro half an hour away is the sort of spot people see and wish they knew how to paint it. A clifftop beauty with a sea-facing castle and a chapel in a sacred sea cave, Pizzo also has countrywide fame for its chocolate pudding: it'd be rude not to try it…

Liked: Fabulous location, very close to the beach.
Site secured at night.
Owner very nice. He told us the site had been in the family for over 50 years.
Very quiet most of the time but I guess this was time of year as bar closed.

Disliked: Site could do with some investment and TLC. Facilities very dated and in need of a good clean. The idea of paying extra for a shower is very old fashioned. The static units could be improved to make the site more aesthetic.
Some aircraft noise from nearby airport.

Local attractions

Having had your fill of famed desserts in Pizzo, work them off by windsurfing and kitesurfing at any number of watersports centres on the beach. For longer trips on the blue sea, head an hour’s drive down to Tropea to catch boats to the Aeolian islands; from green Stromboli with its active volcano to the glitzy yacht crowd on Panarea and the nature-filled wilderness of Filicudi, you’ll likely find something to tickle your fancy on the eight outcrops of this UNESCO-protected archipelago. Back on the mainland, Certosa di Serra San Bruno (an hour's drive) makes a strong case for the monastic life. You don’t have to join this ancient Carthusian monastery in the hills – just take in the peace and the views as you stroll the wooded parkland. If you’re hankering after the more ancient past, Calabria’s main city Reggio Calabria (an hour and a half) is home to a massive archaeological museum, whose major draw is a sculpted pair of Greek wrestlers from the third century BC. Those feeling footsore on the way back should dip a toe or two at the Terme di Caronte (10 minutes from the site), even older volcanic hot springs in a super setting.
