Pitch among the trees

  • Peaceful Lower Saxony touring pitches among mature trees
  • In the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park, 25 minutes' drive from Wolfsburg
  • Dog park, play area and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms on site
Peaceful, spacious and surrounded by soaring trees – if that’s how you like your touring pitches, you’ll be in your element at Camping Loosteich. The setting is all very natural at this Lower Saxony site, which has both sunny and shaded spots thanks to the mature trees all around the pitches. That quiet rural atmosphere is the big draw here – it’s a family-friendly place but not one that’s stuffed full of noisy entertainments and activities (although there is a play area where the kids can run about, and a dog park where your fur babies can do the same). Instead, all efforts have gone into making sure the essential facilities are top notch, to provide a comfortable experience for all guests. Wifi is available across the site, and all pitches have water and electric connections. The large bathroom block houses free hot showers, a baby changing area and step-free/wheelchair-accessible facilities. The list of handy facilities goes on – including a chemical disposal point, a communal fridge/freezer, a gas bottle exchange/purchase service, and a food shop with local products available to buy. In high season you’ll also be able to order fresh bread rolls for delivery (see the notice on site for details of the advance ordering system). So that’s the everyday essentials covered – what will you fill your days with? Well, for starters this site is in the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park, so there are plenty of hiking trails around, and the city of Wolfsburg, known for its car manufacturing, is about 25 minutes drive away.

Local attractions

There are lots of lovely hiking and cycling trails nearby, and several of them take in some of the area’s history too. Look out for ancient stones as you tour the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park, or learn about the legend of Till Eulenspiegel on a trail from Kneitlingen (half an hour’s drive). Wherever you wander, you can cool off at the large open-air pool in Grasleben (five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ cycle). For more heritage, head to the Zonengrenzmuseum (10 minutes’ drive), full of stories about the area’s past close to the East/West Germany border, or look further into the past at Paläon Research and Experience Center (25 minutes), home to the oldest known hunting weapons. International Museum Gifhorn (40 minutes) is built around an old mill and has all sorts of windmill exhibits in lovely garden surroundings. A trip to Wolfsburg (25 minutes) should certainly be on the schedule if you’ve got petrolheads in your gang – both the Autostadt attraction and Foundation Auto Museum Volkswagen are worth visiting. If that’s not your thing, perhaps head instead to art-filled Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg or get scientific at Planetarium Wolfsburg and Phaeno Science Center.
