  • Spacious pitches at a Savoie site close to Lac du Bourget
  • A 20-minute walk to Plage de Chatillon; Aix-les-Bains 20 mins' drive
  • Playground and tennis court on site; snack bar on summer weekends
When a campsite has the word lake in its name, you just know you’ll be in for some lovely waterside scenery – and Camping Onlycamp Les Peupliers du Lac certainly proves that theory. This scenic Savoie site is just a 20-minute walk from the northern tip of Lac du Bourget, a gorgeous spot for walks, watersports or swimming from the family-friendly Plage de Chatillon. Travel a little further along the lake shore and you’ll get to the popular Aix-les-Bains (20 minutes’ drive), a spa town where you can soak in thermal waters. And if that’s not enough water for you yet, the banks of the Rhône river are about 10 minutes’ drive away for boat trips. The site itself has views of the mountains of the Rhône-Alpes, forming a pleasing backdrop to the flat and spacious pitches, which are marked out by hedges and shaded by trees. There’s a playground and a tennis court on site (fee payable for the latter), but this isn’t a place of noisy entertainment – it’s all about chilling out and enjoying the natural setting. (With that in mind, there’s purposely no wifi here, to encourage guests to step away from their gadgets for a while…) On the practical front, this site has a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, a bathroom block and a reception area where staff are happy to dish out helpful local advice. A small shop sells various essentials (including ice creams and coffees), and in summer there’s also a bread delivery service and a snack bar (weekends only). Barbecues are permitted, and you can pick up supplies at the shops in Chindrieux, a mile away.

Local attractions

It has to be the lake first, really – a 20-minute walk gets you to the banks of Lac du Bourget, where you can walk by the water’s edge, and a few minutes more will take you to Plage de Chatillon, a popular spot for swimming, watersports and kids’ games. There are more walks and swims to be had in the Gorges du Sierroz (20 minutes’ drive), or you can take to the waters of the Rhône river with Chanaz Croisières (10 minutes). Away from the water, you may like to stroll through the bamboo at Les Jardins de Lornay (25 minutes) or swing through the trees at Acro’ Aventures Quintal (35 minutes). There are also insights into local history at Musée Gallo-Romain de Chanaz (10 minutes) and Abbaye d’Hautecombe (15 minutes). In Aix-les-Bains (20 minutes), Musée Aqualis will teach you all about the lake’s ecosystem through interactive exhibits; it’s a fun place to visit before a soak in the town’s thermal baths.
