One swimming pool not enough for you? Lucky that you’re heading for Village de Chalets, a rural site in the Sarthe region, because there you have the choice of an indoor pool or swimming in Lake Mansigné – and if you’re holidaying in July and August, you have the option of two outdoor pools as well. Offering an enclosed, traffic-free and secure haven for children, the chalet village is a peaceful haven surrounded by Pays de la Loire countryside. Accommodation is in self-catering lodges sleeping up to six guests, each with covered terraces for alfresco dining, a well-equipped kitchen and plenty of indoor room for family meals and serious loafing. Each chalet also has a barbecue. The 60-hectare Base de Loisirs de Mansigné (less than five minutes’ walk) offers a waterside setting for strolls or picnics on the sandy beach, and during high season you can hire canoes and pedal boats to explore the lake. Other facilities for active families include fishing, a tennis court, mini golf, pétanque courts and a fitness trail; clubs, rackets, and balls can be collected from the leisure centre’s reception. Younger kids can join in with activities organised by the Children’s Club during the summer holidays, and there’s a big playground there as well.

Local attractions

When you can tear the kids away from the beach and all the watersports, chances are they’d like to head for Zoo de la Flèche (20 minutes’ drive) to see the Big 5 African animals in spacious and well-shaded enclosures, raptor flying displays and sea lion shows. There are more animal antics to watch at Spaycific’Zoo (25 minutes) if the youngsters haven’t quite had their fill of wildlife. On cultural jaunts, don’t miss out on a tour of the ornate Château du Lude (20 minutes), part medieval fortress and part handsome Renaissance-era palace, where you can admire elegant rooms with period furnishings, 18th-century kitchens and formal gardens. Le Mans (25 minutes) is famed as the location of the 24-hour car race in June, but there’s plenty of other stuff to see; check out the history of the race at the Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and have a wander around the cobbled historic city centre, its Gallo-Roman turreted ramparts and Cathédrale Saint Julien-Le Mans, a Gothic-era edifice bristling with flying buttresses and gargoyles.
