Whether you’re looking for a peaceful holiday, with family-friendly facilities at your fingertips, or whether you can’t wait to take part in your favourite active pursuits, you should consider staying at Le Clos de Banes, a tree-shaded site in the grounds of an 18th-century country house a 10-minute drive from the village of Sainte-Geneviève-sur-Argence, on the edge of Aubrac Natural Regional Park, in the Aveyron department. Travelling with the whole family? Then you can relax – no need to worry about keeping the kids entertained, for chances are that here they’ll find heaps to keep them busy, from an outdoor pool to a designated play area, plus a pétanque court. Site owners Tony and Angélique also organise themed evenings with entertainment such as local folk music and dancing. There’s plenty of walking to be done in the surrounding area – from challenging hikes in the hills of the Aubrac, to woodland paths around Lac de Sarrans reservoir (15 minutes’ drive). The lake is also a popular destination for fishing and watersports; if you don’t have your own gear, there’s a recreation centre at Garabit-Mallet (50 minutes) where you can hire paddleboards, kayaks and jetskis. When you’re ready to wind down, you can have a long soak at Caleden, a thermal complex in Chaudes-Aigues (half an hour). Back at the site, there is a restaurant and the possibility to arrange for food to be delivered; however, if you wish to cook your own meals, you can source provisions at the supermarket in Sainte-Geneviève.

You might think of bagpipes as something typically Scottish, but did you know there’s a bagpipe museum in Cantoin (10 minutes’ drive)? Here, bright and informative displays will teach you all you need to know about this instrument, plus other local musical traditions. At the Belvédère du barrage EDF (15 minutes), an observation platform at the westernmost tip of Lac de Sarrans, there are exhibits about the 1934 construction of the dam (the eighth highest in France) and the local wildlife, not to mention spectacular views across the reservoir and the forested hills. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife while hiking in Aubrac Natural Regional Park. You might be able to spot deer, voles and ermine, as well as birds of prey – from red kites to peregrine falcons – hovering in the skies above.
