Can’t decide between the peace of a rural site and the convenience of a town location? Sort yourselves with a bit of both at Camping Onlycamp Longue Rive, on the banks of the River Saône on the edge of the Franche-Comté town of Gray. These peaceful pitches are part of a lovely leafy location with plenty of green space to relax in, and mature trees to provide shade on hot summer days. With river views and a pétanque court, playground and miniature golf course on site, you may well feel like you’ve managed to settle in a remote rural spot for some quiet time. In fact that’s not true at all, as this site is in a handy location on the edge of Gray, putting you within easy reach of the centre of this ‘City of Character’ and its attractions, shops, cafés and places to eat. There’s also a small grocery store selling various basics at site reception, and a barbecue area where you can cook up whatever you’ve sourced in town. In high season, the site also has a snack bar selling ice creams and drinks. This mix of urban and rural stretches to the choice of holiday activities nearby too – you could spend your time visiting museums and châteaux, strolling around historic cities or heading out into the local countryside for walks, cycle rides (bikes can be hired on site) or horse riding. The Voie Bleue traffic-free path runs alongside the river for scenic bike outings, and there are boat trips nearby too.

Local attractions

Start with a wander along the riverbank to the centre of Gray – it will take you about 20 minutes to get to attractions like Château de Gray, the Notre-Dame Basilica and the Italianate-style Gray Theatre. It’s also worth visiting the art collection at Museum Baron Martin, taking a cruise along the Saône and, of course, checking out all the local patisseries and bistros. To see some of the local countryside, there are kayak launch points, fishing piers and horse riding centres within about 10 minutes’ drive. The Voie Bleue cycle path, which runs through Gray, is a great way to see some of the riverside scenery – the full path runs for 700 kilometres (from Lyon to Luxembourg), but even a short stretch is very rewarding. A little further afield, you might like to take a guided tour of Château de Ray-sur-Saône (25 minutes’ drive) or explore the UNESCO-listed city of Besançon (50 minutes), with several museums, the Victor Hugo Birthplace and the remains of the 17th-century citadel.
