Looking for a quiet base for active family holidays in the Auvergne? Step forward Camping Le Mayet-de-Montagne, 20 minutes’ walk from the pretty town of the same name, with access to the municipal swimming pool, fishing on neighbouring Lac des Moines, and 10 minutes’ drive from boating adventures on Plan d'eau de Saint-Clément. On site, all is peaceful and calm, with tree-shaded grass pitches neatly divided by hedges for extra privacy, and views over Lac des Moines. A small playground with climbing frames helps younger guests wear off excess energy, and there are plenty of country walks direct from the campsite for exercising any dogs holidaying with you. You’re welcome to fire up the barbecue on site, and you can pick up anything necessary for family feasts at grocery stores in Le Mayet-de-Montagne (20 minutes’ walk). If you’re kayaking or canoeing out on the waters of Plan d'eau de Saint-Clément during the day, you can top up with snacks from the small café by the lake. Simple facilities back at Camping Le Mayet-de-Montagne include showers and washing machines to help keep everyone and everything neat and clean.

Liked: Très bon accueil de la propriétaire des lieux, emplacements délimités et ombragés, sanitaires très propres, camping familial ou le respect des autres est au rdv !

Disliked: L'accueil n'est pas assez ouvert pour pouvoir boire un verre ou manger une glace, une petite épicerie et dépôt de pain serait un plus.

Liked: Nice site to explore the area from, the site owner Anne was very helpful and spoke a little English, the facilities had just been given a paint up so everything nice and clean with lovely hot showers. Be aware as in a lot of French sites you need to take your own toilet paper.

Disliked: Toilet / shower facilities clean but a cold environment (given our weather) and very dated which was not a problem as we used those in our MH

Fun-filled family days out in the locality include treetop climbing courses and zipwires with lake views at Saint-Clément Aventure (10 minutes’ drive), and big racing at the Salle de Sports La Boulaire (five minutes). Horse-mad kids can watch themed dressage displays or go pony trekking through forested countryside at équin’ox (10 minutes). To explore dramatic Auvergne landscapes, pull on the walking boots and hike up to scenic Cascade de la Pisserote, or head for the mysterious Rochers à Cupules de Roussille (both half an hour), strange moss-covered rock formations thought to date from the Stone Age. To inject a little history into the holiday mix, inspect the photogenic ruins of medieval Château de Montgilbert (15 minutes), and take a tour around the ornate apartments of Château de Ravel (an hour, once home to King Philippe III of France), before strolling around the gardens and taking in the views from the courtyard right across to the volcanic peaks of the Chaîne des Puys.
