Mix up the scenery with a stay at Camping Etche Zahar, where sea views, mountain vistas and riverside panoramas are all within easy reach. This family-friendly park is set in a quiet location on the outskirts of the village of Urt, an old fishing port on the Adour river where the Basque Country meets the Landes. Located a mere 500 metres from Urt's shops and cafés, Camping Etche Zahar is a family-run site where there's a range of fab leisure options and a friendly atmosphere. There's an all-round natural vibe, with no pristinely manicured hedges or tarmac driveways; instead, the site's spacious outdoor pool, paddling area, playground and pétanque court are tucked away among the trees. An on-site snack bar is on hand throughout July and August for drinks and quick bites, but if you're not around for the peak of the season it's hardly a hassle to stroll down into Urt and drop by one of its food shops instead. Back at base, two communal barbecue areas make promising spots for sorting sociable sizzles (and a coin-operated laundry room is available in case of unexpected ketchup stains). Another plus is this site's location – it's a piffling 20-minute drive to the centre of the historic city of Bayonne, while some of the best bits of the Basque coast and mountains can be seen within half an hour of setting off.

Liked Lovely pool and bar area, good sized pitches which are clearly marked out, friendly receptionist who spoke English.

Disliked Would have preferred toilet roll and soap to be provided, sadly too many mosquito's.

Petit détail bien symapthique : une petite tablette porte-shampoing directement au niveau de la cabine de douche, à proximité du robinet.

Liked A quiet, clean, and pleasant campsite. A lovely pool area. Nothing fancy, just a nice place to be!

Disliked The only negative for us was a lack of fridge-freezers in which to re-freeze the ice blocks for our cool box.

Local attractions

You'll get a taste of the local architecture while strolling around Urt, but for a proper look at Basque-style buildings you'll want to head to La Bastide-Clairence (10 minutes' drive), a 14th-century town with traditional timbered houses, historic churches and a centuries-old Jewish cemetery. Older still are the Isturitz and Oxocelhaya caves (25 minutes), an important Paleolithic site that's best surveyed on an hour-long guided tour. In the same neck of the woods is Cambo-les-Bains (30 minutes), a town in the foothills of the Pyrenees with a chocolate museum and fruit farm where you can pick your own. Looking to break through the cloud barrier? Jump aboard the Train de la Rhune, a hill railway where you can make out mountains and coast on both sides of the France-Spain border. In terms of local shopping opportunities, it's hard to beat Bayonne (20 minutes), a sizeable city that’s also home to impressive ramparts and a 13th-century cathedral. For beach time, head to the swanky sands of Biarritz (30 minutes) or to one of the quieter bays north or south of the city.
