  • Pop-up site in Tanyfron with friendly alpacas to meet
  • A 10-minute drive to Wrexham; 25 minutes to Llangollen
  • Hammocks and swing chairs to relax in; archery or bushcraft to book
Fancy spending your break among alpacas? Head to the north Wales village of Tanyfron and a stay at Gwenfro Alpacas, where the woolly residents wander freely around, giving guests the fabulous chance to get to know these friendly and characterful animals. The animals are the main attractions here, but you could equally just come to this pop-up site for the peaceful vibe. There are hammocks, swing chairs and outdoor seats to relax in, and you’ll be able to enjoy a campfire or barbecue evening at the tree-lined pitches. The peaceful atmosphere is boosted by keeping the place car free (you’ll unload in the layby about 100 metres from the pitches and then need to move to the free street parking in the village). Families are very welcome here, and kids should be able to find plenty of fun things to do in the woods or at the park next door. If they (or you) need a bit of extra activity, you can ask the site owners to organise shooting, archery or bushcraft skills sessions. All very countryside, right? Yes indeed – but with the added bonus of having a couple of villages within a mile or so to provide shops, pubs, petrol stations and the like. Wrexham is about 10 minutes’ drive away for a bigger collection of amenities, plus an assortment of attractions (including the famed Wrexham AFC, of course).

What customers say

This unique, off-grid "pop-up" campsite offers an adventurous eco-camping experience, ideal for those seeking a wilder feel rather than manicured pitches and fancy facilities. Visitors particularly enjoyed the "free-range" environment with alpacas and hens, with children loving the interaction. Campfires and the bell tent experience were highlighted as great. Owners are consistently praised for being exceptionally helpful, friendly, and welcoming, adding to the overall positive and memorable stay.

Alpaca bell tent

Liked Thank you for an amazing stay. We had a fantastic two days camping in the bell tent! The campsite was lovely and peaceful and we loved the alpacas! It was a very unique experience and was able to get hands on with the alpacas, we thoroughly enjoyed our time. Nick and Wendy are brilliant hosts and more than accommodating. We were provided with everything we could have needed and they were both very friendly and passionate about what they do. We really did have such a lovely stay and we can’t wait to book again! Thanks again, Mike and Beth

Disliked Nothing, we had a lovely stay.

Alpaca bell tent

Liked Fantastic experience! Lovely little campsite for 2 families/parties at a time, which makes it a serene experience. Highly recommend! The hosts were extremely accommodating and made us feel at home. There are not that many places that provide such exceptional customer service.

The bell tent had everything we needed and even more. Feeding and walking with alpacas were the highlights of the week; we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked Unique “pop-up” camping experience, kids (age 8/9) loved the “free-range” experience with alpacas and hens. Campfire in the evening was great. Great fun had with our small campervan. If you’re looking for manicured pitches and fancy toilet block it’s not for you. If you like a bit of adventure and eco-camping experience - this is the place. Owners couldn’t have been more helpful.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked If you are looking for a wild camping experience (with a few alpacas thrown in) then this is the place to be. Owner was brilliant, friendly and welcoming, with a true passion for what he is offering. Loved every second of it.

Disliked Didn’t dislike anything. As long as you are aware that you are staying in a secluded spot with basic (but functional) facilities then you can’t go wrong.
