  • Dog-friendly touring pitches at a working farm in central Anglesey
  • Rhosneigr beach 10 minutes' drive; Beaumaris and Benllech 25 minutes
  • Horses, chickens and sheep on site; pub and shop five minutes' walk
Come for the farmyard fun – stay for the walks, beach days, watersports, family attractions… Maes Carafanau Penbryn Caravan Site is part of a working farm in the village of Gwalchmai, and it’s a fabulous spot indeed for families, couples and solo visitors alike. As you may expect from a farm, there’s lovely green scenery all around here, with paths leading directly from the site to some scenic walking and bike trails. And of course there are farm animals too – this place is home to chickens, sheep, horses and ponies. Facilities here include a play area for the kids and a dog field where visiting canines can have a good run about. There’s also a well-equipped modern bathroom block with toilets, showers, an accessible/family bathroom and a washing-up area. An Elsan point and grey waste point are also provided, and there are picnic tables for your meals (perhaps cooked on a barbecue, which you’re welcome to bring along). The village centre is five minutes’ walk away for a shop, pub and bus stop. This is a rural location, but it’s also a strategic one for getting out to explore all that Anglesey has to offer. It’s fairly central within the island, and nearby access to the A5 and A55 means that it’s easy to get to whichever attractions and activities you’d like to fill your days with – even Beaumaris, at the far eastern end of the island, is only 25 minutes’ drive away.

Highly recommended, spotless campsite with new, modern facilities, especially the great showers. Owners are friendly & super helpful. Spacious, well-kept pitches. Minor laundry improvements expected, but guests loved it & want to return! Good spot for Anglesey.

Liked Clean showers

Disliked Lots of children
No shelving in shower block
Limited hanging hooks for clothes etc

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the constructive comments regarding the hanging of clothes. We are now in the process of fitting more hooks and will be installing shelves over the winter period.
We are disappointed to see that you though our customer service was a 1/10. Cleanliness and customer service are our 2 priorities at Penbryn. We were also rather surprised as the only time you approached a member of staff was to ask for a refund due to the poor weather.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked We recently stayed at this campsite and there were both good and bad points to our experience-
The site itself is very clean and well maintained.
Modern shower and toilet facilities which were spotless during our stay.
Good sized pitches with plenty of space.
The location is great, making it a convenient base for exploring the area.

Disliked Unfortunately, despite the good facilities, we cut our trip short. A few days into our holiday we went out for the day and came back to find our tent open, even though we had made sure it was closed before going out. At the time we didn’t think too much of it, but it did make us feel uneasy. Then, a couple of days later, we returned from another day out to find both doors of our tent ripped. This was NOT due to tent tension and we still don’t know what caused it. Staff did come and take a look and kindly taped it for us, but we felt uncomfortable leaving the tent unattended afterwards so we decided to cut our trip short and travel home the following day. Better camera coverage would have been more helpful, as the current cameras only cover part of the site.

Rules also didn’t seem to be enforced. Dogs are supposed to be on leads at all times, many were left to roam freely around pitches and tents. Children were also left wandering unsupervised, even coming up to strangers’ cars and tents, which didn’t feel appropriate or safe.

a caravan a few pitches down left their dog to bark late at night and early in the morning, which made it hard to sleep. This was no fault of the owners but it did affect our stay.

From the manager: Thank you for your positive comments, however we are sad to hear that you were unhappy with some aspects.

When we came to help you fix your tent, you never mentioned it being open on a previous day. As I explained to you it did, in my experience, look like over tensioning hence why both fly sheets (on both doors) had freyed in the same place and there were no cuts or scratch marks. The cameras did cover your tent but no footage showed anyone or anything approaching your tent and as you stated, nothing was moved or taken from your tent.

In terms of dogs running loose we apologise for this, we have strict rules in place, therefore if you would have mentioned this to a member of staff during your stay we would have had a word with the owners at the time.

Children do wander respectfully around the site as their parents feel that it is a safe environment to do so. We do however not tolerate any anti-social behaviour in any respect. We do advertise as a family and dog friendly site. We live on site and wander around often throughout the day thus creating the safe feeling that most of our guests experience.

We apologise that you had to cut your stay a day short however, the weather forecasted for your day of departure was rather wet, windy and miserable and it was a good thing you got your stuff packed away in the dry.

If we visit Anglesey again, would definitely return here.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked So exceptionally friendly, bathrooms incredible and all the facilities you would need and more! Incredibly easy check in and out. From start to finish: the pitches are really easy to navigate to and the electric and water was very easy to use (make sure you have an adaptor). There is a small play park, a dog park, a field with a football goal, sheep, horses, chickens, utility room with washing machine, dish washing facilities, bathrooms are superb. Very clean and was more like hotel bathrooms. Staff were exceptionally with email on the day and then face to face after check in. Definitely coming back.

Local attractions

Anglesey is an island, of course, so the coast is always a big draw. You may like to seek out natural attractions like South Stack island (25 minutes’ drive), head to beaches like Rhosneigr (10 minutes) and Benllech (25 minutes) or take a boat ride from Beaumaris (25 minutes) to Puffin Island. For walkers, there’s always the option of a jaunt along the Anglesey Coastal Path (or part of it anyway – the whole thing is about 135 miles long). The colourful surroundings of former copper mine Parys Mountain (half an hour) are also lovely to walk through, or you could head to Newborough (20 minutes) to walk through the pine forest to the beach and out to Ynys Llanddwyn. Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes) and Plas Newydd House and Gardens (20 minutes) are top picks for historic buildings to visit; for family days out, try Pili Palas Nature World (15 minutes), Anglesey Sea Zoo (25 minutes) or GreenWood Family Park (25 minutes).
