Pitching field

  • Relaxed and rural dog-friendly site with plenty of space and seclusion
  • A 10-minute walk to Llangammarch Wells and its train station
  • Heart of Wales Line Trail and the Via Beata route within 10 minutes
Fancy opting for something a little more offbeat than usual for your next trip to Mid Wales? Enter the eclectic Irfon Valley Pods and Camping, part of a smallholding scattered with curios collected by the owner. Free-roaming chickens, geese and ducks are also to be seen in the adjacent field at this park a 10-minute walk from the centre of Llangammarch Wells. In fact, it’s all about the relaxed rural pursuits here with guests taking on activities including walking in the wildlife-rich surrounds, dining alfresco on the site’s picnic tables and cosying up around the large campfire with eyes turned skyward in search of the red kites that often fly overhead. As for travelling to this Powys park, those without a car will be chuffed to know they can ask the driver of the bus from Builth Wells (15 minutes’ drive) to drop them right at the front door. The entrance of the site is easy to spot – just look out for the couple of cutout giraffes peering over the fence. A railway station is half a mile away too and the village has access points to two long-distance footpaths: the 140-mile Heart of Wales Line Trail and the Via Beata route from Lowestoft in Suffolk to St Davids in Pembrokeshire. There's a smart loo block on site with three toilets, a shower and three washing-up sinks. There's also a communal room with games and a shared fridge, microwave and kettle. There's also an outdoor cold shower.

Daffodil camping pod

Liked: My small dog, Agnes, and I were greeted on arrival by two wonderful young men who took me to my 'Daffodil' pod, which was simply stunning. With more than ample sleeping and storage space, it had fabulous views and was just a few steps from the super clean shower and toilet facilities and the wonderfully ornate outdoor wash-hand basins. The small children's play area and the games room alongside these are brilliant. It is clear that much thought has gone into all elements of the site, from the aesthetics and décor of the pods to the 'honesty' café and the wonderful Museum established in a static caravan by site manager Jerry (who also happens to do the school bus run for local children). There is plenty of good walking around the site and the whole area is extremely peaceful. We felt replenished after just one night's stay. One of the favourite parts of our visit was taking our belongings from the car to the pod in a specially designed, lightweight wheelbarrow. What fun! We couldn't recommend the site highly enough and are looking forward to going back when driving through to South Wales once more.

Daffodil camping pod

Liked: Loved this site, the owners were so welcoming and friendly and checked we had everything we needed for our stay. The pod was spacious and clean and tidy with a kettle, there was also a communal kitchen with a fridge and microwave. There was a games room and also board games that we could borrow if we wanted to. The toilets and shower were immaculate. The site was so peaceful and exactly what we went there for to relax and recharge our batteries. Will definitely be visiting them again.

Disliked: Nothing

Sunflower camping pod

Liked: What a magical place! Stunning scenery surrounding a perfect site which is meticulously clean and meets every one of our needs. We stayed as a group of three friends in one of the smaller pods and in a campervan. Each pitch had its own fire pit and picnic table and chairs. The van hook up was great and the scenery and setting was quiet and beautiful with the train station in easy reach if you need it. The owners were so lovely and friendly and having firewood on hand was a lovely touch. The amenity block was above and beyond our needs and was spotless. We’ll definitely return.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The quiet (excluding geese), the night sky, campfire and picnic bench, flat hardstanding pitch.

Disliked: The geese in the field next door - they were quite noisy early morning.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and the night sky, which has been quite impressive recently.
Sorry about the vocal geese. They usually only make a noise when fed in the morning, but it's currently spring time, which means mating season and plenty of arguments amongst each other!

Local attractions

Stunning views are to be had at every turn on short drives to spots like Llanwrtyd Wells (10 minutes), home of the laughter-inducing World Bog Snorkelling Championships and Man versus Horse Marathon. Builth Wells (15 minutes) is also known for hosting a famed event: Europe's largest agricultural show, the Royal Welsh Show. Not about in the summer while it’s on? Embark on an escapade to the Elan Valley (35 minutes) instead for dawdles among the dams and lakes that supply water to the Midlands. The Brecon Beacons National Park is around the same distance away for wanders in some of Wales’ prettiest landscapes; closer by (10 minutes) are forays to the forest of Crychan, which also hosts car rallies and horse riding events.
