  • Stays on a Fife organic farm 20 minutes’ walk from Falkland Palace
  • Five minutes’ drive to Falkland Hill; 40 minutes’ drive to St Andrews
  • Quiet family site with an organic café, farm shop and plant nursery
Whatever type of accommodation you choose at Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm, you’ll be in easy reach of Scottish countryside, with views over the Lomond Hills. This site is just one the edge of the historic forest-filled Falkland Estate, so you'll be able to get straight out onto woodland walks from your accommodation. This relaxed spot has a splendid feeling of rural isolation, but it's easily accessed from the main A912 running between Falkland and Strathmiglo in Fife, for straightforward arrivals and getting out and about to the area's attractions. In good news for those who prefer to avoid cooking on holiday, there’s an outdoor café on site, serving up vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as organic cakes and soups. Otherwise, there’s a really well-stocked store right next door, with organic fruit and veg grown on the farm, as well as meat reared locally, groceries, beer and wine – or you can soon be in Cupar (20 minutes’ drive) to pick up supplies in major supermarkets. For a keepsake of your stay at Pillars of Hercules, you can also pick up home-grown flowers, bulbs and herbs at the plant nursery between March and October. Please note: the site owners ask that you respect the peace of the countryside and their land. If you’re looking for night-time entertainment, a bar or somewhere to play loud music, this is not the site for you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The staff were really friendly and helpful. The pitch was a good size. The facilities were really good and very clean. We didn't use the play area because it was raining but it looked really good and the kids were disappointed not to use it. We got the kids hot chocolate in the morning and they were very impressed with it, that's a big achievement with our fussy children!

Disliked: We were on the furthest pitch from the toilets and it was quite a distance from the tent if anyone needed the toilet at night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Whole place was peaceful and pretty. We got caught in very heavy rain but the camp site drained off well, no puddles! Which was really surprising because it did seriously bucket it down for a couple hours.

Stayed in the polytunnel for a few hours the next day while the kids played which was really lovely after such a wet day previously, even managed to toast some marshmallows like we had told the kids we would do!

Staff in cafe and shop all utterly wonderful, super helpful and food at the cafe was brilliant.

Already planning a return camping trip with another friend and their children, hopefully will do 2 nights this time and then we can walk to Maspie Den and the local town.

Disliked: Okay so the car park is quite far up from the campsite. There are wheelbarrows provided which is actually really clever and helpful, but the campsite to the car was too far for my littlest to wait alone in one spot or the other and she couldn't take walking back and forth so I took my car down to the verge and parked up to unload and reload as quickly as I could. I really hope this was okay, no one said anything and there was plenty space for cars and tractors to pass. There's hard ground as you enter the camp field, I was on that - there's a sign to say to stay on the hard ground and not park on the field, so technically I did as said, but still hoping no one was annoyed and that I used the space correctly.

To be honest I'd do that again next time too and as I am planning to come back within the next couple months I'm going to double check that I can park on the hard ground again with staff. I'll have more company next time so we can watch the little easier so if it's a problem I can use wheelbarrows.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The whole place is lovely, very idyllic. Camping ground was good, space allotted was generous, all in all nice setting to camp.

Disliked: Toilets were really far from the camp area and my kids very young so that was tough but unavoidable due to park layout.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked: Surrounding area was good for walks. Cafe onsite for coffee. Campfires allowed with decent sized grass pitch.

Disliked: Toilets and wash room are clearly for cafe customers rather than campers. One shower, no heating, shared with every other customer. No cold tap for cleaning teeth. Those booking a hard standing pitch I imagine would be disappointed with the size and condition given that it doubles as a carpark. Didn't feel like those staying over were the main focus of the business to be honest and I think that's reflected on the facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely spot to go camp for the weekend, Shop has everything you need with good washing facilities and parking. Nice walks to go on if you have a dog.

Disliked: We had pitch F, which was was nice and flat but right next to the water tap. We did get a lot of kids/people coming in and around the tent to collect water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We enjoyed: Price of wood was good, campsite was clean and very quiet, mooing cows from a distance was nice to hear. Walking wooden path was lovely. Bakery items in shop was nice. Cafe and shop staff was nice a helpful. Play area for kids was nice.

Disliked: We didn't enjoy: Cafe cakes were dry, and bitter. Campsite grass was to high which resulted in midges. Shop veggie prices were to high. Would of been nice if they had hay bales for kids to play on it being autumn, maybe next autumn?

Local attractions

A visit to Renaissance-era Falkland Palace (20 minutes’ walk) should top your to-do list, for its ornate architecture, formal gardens and real tennis court built in the times of King James V. After seeing the palace, amble up Falkland Hill (also known as East Lomond, five minutes’ drive to the car park) and be rewarded with views over Fife to the North Sea. The Fife Coastal Path (20 minutes' drive) is open to both walkers and bikers. Cyclists also have a route especially to themselves, as Pillars of Hercules is on National Cycle Route 1, a massive trail linking Dover with the Shetland Islands. To see more of Fife, take a driving tour of the East Neuk’s seaside villages of Elie (35 minutes), Anstruther and Crail (both 45 minutes, and all with tempting harbour-front pubs). Stop off in university town St Andrews (40 minutes) to see the cathedral and castle ruins, or let golfing aficionados take a guided tour of the famed Old Course. If you fancy playing on these championship links, be sure to book a tee-off time well in advance.
