The Hobbit House
Pitches
Hobbit house with outdoor cooking area
Fully enclosed 625m2 pitch

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378
As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Hobbit house microlodge

Liked: Quiet and peaceful campsite in a well-designed field. Liked the individual sinks / rubbish bins, one for each electric pitch, and shared between 2 or 3 for each non-electric pitch. Very friendly and helpful owner. Through the double door and the private, secret, woodland glade to reach the Hobbit Lodge - all well-thought out and comfortable.

Lovely clean pitch and huge area too.
Fire pit was great, although we had an issue with the wood not catching. All in all was very nice. I would return.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: What a lovely site! I received a very warm welcome on arrival from the site owners. Each pitch has a brilliant unique sink set up with bins, each converting antique pails, large bowls etc into a sink. Ingenious, practical and quirky. It’s a simple site with really clean toilets, there are showers too. Overall there is a sense of great care and thoughtfulness. Don’t hesitate to book I’d say 😄

Disliked: Nothing at all

Liked: Everything! 2nd visit here and we'll go back. Could do with some solar lights for light and ambiance at night but otherwise absolutely fantastic little place to stay. Super friendly hosts, plenty of provided wood for fires too.

Disliked: Nothing!

Premier electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The site was easy find using the What3Words reference, and was easy to access from the M5. That said, it felt very much in the countryside and we loved watching the wildlife that lived in and around the site.

The Premium Pitch was perfect for a group: having cooking facilities, hot and cold running water and table/seating made life so much easier and would have been a life-saver if the weather was poor. Also you could shut the gate and keep children contained but still with plenty of room to run around, if you wanted to!

The kitchen was remarkably well-equipped, from can/bottle opener and washing up liquid, to pots and pans.

Hosts were friendly and helpful but not overbearing.

Disliked: Having a hob was great but cooking for a group on two closely set gas rings was challenging - but no more so than if we had brought our own cooking equipment!

There was some road noise from the A road along the edge of the site (even at night, which surprised us), but it really was not intrusive - and that road helps to make the site easy to access.

Beware that the mobile phone signal is patchy/poor depending on provider, so definitely don't count on having internet access.

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes). The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.
