  • Exclusive-use rural site on five acres of new woodland
  • In the Mendip Hills, half an hour's drive from Bristol
  • Wild site with firepit, toilet and shower; lake 300 metres away
You want space? You’ll certainly get that at Butcombe New Wood – five acres of it, in fact (or 4.53 football fields, if that’s easier to imagine). And you’ll have it all to yourselves too, as this site half an hour’s drive from Bristol is only let to one group at a time. Around that huge amount of space is a native woodland that was planted by the owner (in conjunction with the Woodland Trust) back in 2015 – the trees and wildflowers are growing well now and have become a haven for wildlife like deer, badgers, rabbits and all sorts of birds. Three sides of the site are flanked by farm fields, with the fourth looking out over a wooded valley and a stream that leads to Blagdon Lake about 300 metres away. The pitching space has been set up in a large south-facing clearing that’s been kitted out with a sink, a compost toilet and a cold shower, plus a firepit that’s supplied with a sack of firewood. This is essentially a wild camping experience so there’s no electricity but some solar lighting is provided to help you find your way. This site is for tents only, with no vehicles allowed on site. There’s parking just outside the entrance, with a 60-metre walk down to the pitch area (largely level but with one gentle slope) – wheelbarrows are on hand to help you haul your kit down there.

Local attractions

If the five acres isn’t sufficient for your planned roaming, don’t worry – there’s plenty more fab countryside nearby. The site is within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a short amble from Blagdon Lake and with access to a network of footpaths to wander along. For a slightly different perspective on your rural surrounds, join horse riding outings (15 minutes’ drive), head out for a game of golf (20 minutes) or don your hard hat to head underground at Wookey Hole caves (25 minutes). The pretty Yeo Valley gardens (10 minutes) and the vineyards of Aldwick Estate (five minutes) are good spots if you’re after something low-paced. And there’s plenty of variety beyond that too: check out Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) for some stunning scenery (and tasty cheese), head to Bristol (half an hour) for city wanderings, or get your bucket and spade ready for a seaside day in Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes).
