  • Family-friendly farm site on the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Langton Matravers; five minutes' drive from Swanage
  • Café; adventure farm (additional fee) with a petting zoo and soft play
A family-friendly site with grassy field pitches on a working farm, Salt Pig The Farm - Putlake sits on the outskirts of the peaceful Dorset village of Langton Matravers, on the Isle of Purbeck. This is an excellent base to unwind or explore the Purbecks, whether it's walking, cycling, climbing, kayaking, coasteering or visiting tourist attractions. When you roll up here, you're free to pick any spot you like. This site is all about unwinding and soaking in the countryside views, so off-ground firepits and barbecues are welcome. On-site amenities include toilets, token-operated showers and a washing-up point. You’ll never be far from the sea on this scenic stretch of land: the site is a five-minute drive from Swanage beach and 15 minutes from Studland beach. Walks through fields to the South West Coast Path are directly accessible from the site; once there, you're on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and can get to spectacular views like the Dancing Ledge (check out the small sea pool…) and the caves at Winspit Quarry. The site has a small shop and an on-site café serving local produce, including breakfast and lunch. In the evenings, it sometimes opens up an offset smoker barbecue or pizza oven. Salt Pig The Farm - Putlake also has an adventure farm (an additional fee applies) with a petting zoo, a large indoor soft play area, a playground and pedal go-karts. With a bus stop and a range of footpaths just outside the site, it's easy to explore the area on foot, by bus or by car. There are car-free trails to the historic village of Corfe Castle (one hour and 15 minutes on foot or a 10-minute drive). And just in case this all-round top location wasn’t already great enough, it's also less than 500 metres from the local pub, which has a cosy beer garden. Another popular pub is a five-minute drive away – although, after a few ciders, the bus might come in handy.

What customers say

Great views, peaceful vibe, and ample space. Friendly staff, tasty cafe food, and good base for Swanage. Basic but clean facilities (some mention shower tokens). A few minor points on slopes/crowding, but most loved it and would come back.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Perfect location, easy walk to dancing ledge to do our coasteering.
Said it was fully booked but really wasn't that full up, loads of space!
The campsite had lovely surroundings, hot showers which were cleaned daily. Lovely cafe and a soft play for the kiddies. Also piggies and other animals!

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked There was alpacas, sheep and donkeys in the field behind us. Pigs just at the bottom of the camping field, we didn’t pay to go into the adventure farm but still got to enjoy plenty of animals! The views are amazing! We only planned a quick one night stop but once we set up we decided to add an extra day! Will definitely be coming back.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Theirs is lots of space and the pitches are large. It was great for the children to be able to run around.
The staff were really friendly and helpful.
The soft play and farm were great for the kids. We spent the who day there and the kids had a great time.
The café is lovely, great food at a reasonable price. Kids menu was great too.
The toilets and showers were clean.

Disliked No hand drying facilities in the toilets.
There were only two showers, which was fine as it wasn’t busy during our stay, but I can imagine during busy times it could get frustrating.
Only one sink for washing up. We stayed for two nights and the second night we had to wait to wash up as the sink was in use.
Although the soft play and farm were great, it was quite pricey. For one adult and two children we paid £32. It would be good if you had the option to include this in your pitch fee & maybe a discounted price for campers.
The camp site is a field on a slope. Although it was easy to find a fairly level pitch, if you arrive and it is busy, it could be challenging.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very clean and tidy toilet and shower facilities.
Lovely little cafe for a quick bite of cake.

Disliked The whole site is on a slope, however, there are some good spots around the edges of the perimeter.
There’s only one toilets/shower block within the site, so if you park up further away whilst trying to avoid the slope, it’s a bit of a trek to these facilities down the hill and then up the hill back to your tent.

Local attractions

With a long sandy beach and shallow waters, Swanage is a popular destination for a family day at the seaside. And when you’re all beached out, you can head to Prince Albert Gardens for views of the Victorian pier and Swanage Bay, or take a ride on the Swanage Railway's heritage trains all the way to Corfe Castle and beyond. Overlooked by the ruins of 11th-century Corfe Castle, Dorset Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to get wet (at the inflatable water park) and/or muddy (at the assault course with cargo nets, monkey bars and mud slides). If you’re into militaria, you'll likely appreciate the displays at The Tank Museum (25 minutes), which include armoured vehicles from both World Wars, plus other conflicts like the wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan. Iconic Jurassic Coast destinations Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are half an hour's drive away.
