Like the sound of a peaceful retreat set among sloping fields and a private woodland on the Devon and Cornwall border? Hurray for Dux Farm Retreat, where there are pods in a stunning meadow just 15 minutes’ drive away from surfing beaches in Bude on the Bristol Channel. It's also a 35-minute drive from the historic fishing village of Clovelly in North Devon. Enough about the outdoors… what are the inside of the pods like? Each pod features a kingsize bed, a full-sized shower (there are no wet rooms here) and a kitchenette with everything you should need. Treat yourself to a soak in the outdoor bath too, which is completely private and big enough for two. And the bonuses keep on coming, as you may be able to see the Milky Way glitter on clear nights. For days when you all feel like chilling – or when the weather isn’t playing nice, cosy up on the sofa and watch your favourite Netflix film. If you're bringing a dog, there are private woodland walks direct from the pitches but please make sure they are kept on leads around the chickens and other livestock. When you fancy eating out or tasting some Cornish cider, there’s a gastro-pub in Pyworthy, just 20 minutes’ stroll down quiet country lanes.

Plum Tree camping pod

Liked: It’s hard to know where to start as just about everything was perfect. Janine communication before we had even arrived was very good. Plenty of information. Which made finding the location easy and where to park when we got there.

If you want some peace and rest you will be hard pressed to find anything better. The 3 Pods are located in a field to one side of the property. They are well spaced apart so you definitely get the feel of privacy and your own space. As they are a short walk from the carpark trolleys are available to take your baggage to your designated Pod we were in Plum which is actually the furthest away but I also think the best location for privacy.

As you enter the Pod the first thing that hits you is the level of finish it’s been decorated to a very high standard with pretty much everything you need for a stay. In fact you could turn up with just your clothes if you so wished.

Some lovely touches are milk left in the fridge, local eggs left for you to try and welcome cookies in a jar, Tea and Coffee are also available.

Janine made a point of coming out to meet us and during our stay messaged us just to confirm we were ok with everything.

Im very fussy about the beds that I sleep on due to back problems but this bed was so comfortable that I slept really well. The shower is powerful and hot which is quite something considering you are in the middle of a field.

Cooking facilities are very good with an induction hob that is rapid and a microwave. The fridge is a good size so you are able to store quite a large amount of food and drinks. There a small freezer compartment for ice if required.

The Wifi is very good with a strong connection and the TV has a great selection of channels should you wish to use it.

Our visit was New Year so we were not able to use the outside space to it full potential but I imagine it would be a great space in the summer especially the outside bath with is very well secluded. Theres a sofa area and dining table and chairs at the front in your own fenced of space with a fire pit and logs ready to use.

The attention to detail and the thought about the end user is very much apparent in everything.

We are already planning our next visit and will be booking again once dates are confirmed.

Disliked: I would have only one suggestion. As there’s no power in the bathroom and rightly so. There was no mirror that my partner could to do her hair in with straighters or hair dryer. A long mirror on the inside of the cupboard might help this. But it was just a minor thing and certainly had no effect on our stay!!!

From the manager: Hi Tim, thank you for our amazing review. So thrilled you had a fabulous stay with us. We definitely appreciate all feedback and are in the process of installing full length mirrors in the wardrobe - we had never thought about being able to dry hair in front of a mirror so that is very helpful feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Liked: What a beautiful place to stay !
Excellent accommodation with attention to detail on those little personal touches, making it home from home . Made such perfect use of the space within and around the pod , giving privacy but an open space feeling too . The outside bath tub was a lovely touch too of an evening .

Very relaxed break and highly recommend .

Local attractions

If you fancy exploring the Cornwall and North Devon coastline on foot, hike sections of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes’ drive), turning south or north from Bude, for mesmerising sea views from soaring cliffs. Up the adrenaline levels on the waves at Crooklets or Summerleaze surfing beaches, where you can hire gear and novices can have lessons, take a dip in tidal Bude Sea Pool (all 20 minutes) or simply have a snooze on the sand. Head inland and you’ll hit Devon’s Dartmoor National Park (40 minutes) for moorland meanders up to the massive granite boulders atop Black-a-Tor (55 minutes), or to mysterious prehistoric stone circles like Nine Stones (50 minutes). Cornwall has its fair share of attractions too. Have a wander around the clifftop castle at Tintagel (45 minutes), rumoured to be the birthplace of legendary King Arthur, and then visit the eccentric Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (half an hour) for a delve into the world of magic and paganism. Get back to present-day normality with a stop off at foodie Padstow (an hour) for harbourside fish and chips or award-winning dining.
