  • Wild camping a 10-minute drive from Boscastle, northern Cornwall
  • Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay 10 minutes’ drive; Bude 15 minutes
  • A 10-minute walk from public transport options and a pub serving food
Gather the kids, crate up the dog and head to Cornwall for a no-frills holiday at Rosecare Fields. This pop-up leave-no-trace site sits just off the A39 road, a 10-minute drive from Boscastle, on the northern coast. What’s available to the budget-conscious visitor here? Well, for starters, there are two large, level, grassy fields where you can set up among colourful wildflowers. And it would be remiss not to mention the heart-opening rural vistas, the blissful tranquillity of the place or the surrounding woodland trails. There is a portable toilet on site, plus access to mains drinking water, and barbecues are allowed so stock up on the necessaries at any shop or supermarket you might drive past on your way here. Firewood may be available to buy on site, but if you don’t want to risk being unable to light the campfire, you might want to add that to your shopping list. The beach at Crackington Haven is a 10-minute drive away along a country lane. Some might prefer to take the A39, which is especially handy to hit Widemouth Bay (10 minutes) or the town of Bude (15 minutes). If you don’t want to drive at all, buses to local destinations run from Wainhouse Corner, a 10-minute walk from the site. At this intersection there are also a grocery shop, a petrol station and a traditional pub serving home-cooked meals.

Local attractions

A whitewashed cottage on the harbour at Boscastle houses the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, with displays ranging from potions and amulets, to altar figurines of pagan deities. From there, follow the South West Coast Path to Warren Point for spectacular coastal views. Among the attractions at Tintagel (25 minutes’ drive) are the atmospheric ruins of King Arthur’s castle; Merlin’s Cave, which extends across the width of the peninsula (and which can be visited only at low tide; do keep an eye on your watch and tide times); and the atmospheric statue of ‘Gallos’, representing a cloaked figure carrying a sword. The South West Coast Path runs along the clifftops of the Hartland Cornwall Heritage Coast (half an hour), through grassy fields and pastureland. From the trail you can clamber down to sheltered coves like Rane and Wren beaches and admire fantastic ocean views – and great sunsets, too.
