  • Small Greener Camping Club site on the edge of the South Downs
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale Greener Camping Club site is set within 200 acres of woodland just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park and about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment, you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…). Campfires and barbecues are permitted, but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

What customers say

Peaceful, spacious, well-run site. Clean, basic facilities with an eco-vibe. Guests loved owner Jason, big pitches, and woodland walks. Fire pits popular. Most found it excellent, though a few mentioned minor facility issues (water pressure/hot water) and felt it was a bit pricey.

Littlewood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (wild)

Liked Beautiful surroundings that are pretty close to wild camping. The toilets and washing up areas were clean and in good condition. Jason was there to greet us and guide us with some information when we arrived. Excellent instructions to find the place and what the terms were.

Disliked There seemed to be a large group camping in the vicinity, who sang well into the night. Unclear whether they were in the same site or in an adjacent property. Fortunately the children fell asleep regardless and were well rested in the morning.

The Meadow non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked What a treasure we found in the Hampshire countryside. A wonderful, peaceful site. The organisation was super and our host could not have been more welcoming. Stunning walks from the site which suited our dogs perfectly! A lovely weekend get away for us. Thank you.

Bell tent

Liked The site was lovely, grass well kempt and site spaces were nice and big. There is plenty of wooded areas to walk and the lovely sounds of animals moving around. We stayed in a bell tent and it was lovely except the “bed”
Good showers and toilets were clean

Disliked Kitchen area in “the clearing” could do with being cleaned each day, there had been some hedge trimming (I guess) and there was leaves and branches and other debris in the sink and on the side where they hadn’t been cleared up so the area wasn’t clean to put your washing up to drain.
Make sure you keep to the 5mph speed limit or risk being told off quite rudely by the owner (I assume) yes I understand the need to be slow and being told to slow down wasn’t the issue, as quite rightly so we should be told if need be but it could of been said in a better way. We were told “it’s written in the information you receive” I checked my emails and only the booking confirmation was received and after readying through it to check I hadn’t missed anything there is nothing written in it

If you pay for the “adult only” area as that is what u want then don’t expect it to be the case as we had a large group come which included several children (luckily they were respectful and quiet) even the owner said “I know it’s adults only but there is a large group coming which has children” (this was in the same area we were in)

If you hire one of the bell tents don’t be expecting a “solid” bed as it is a blow up one which deflated and so the fitted sheet kept coming off and you’d be woken up by being tangled in the sheet.

Personally I’d recommend taking your own cooking equipment as the sauce pan which is there is useless due to the coating coming off so can’t use it, there is a stove of sort but you have to get logs etc to heat it up (we didn’t use it so can’t say if it was any good)

I was told that we had been given the information about the site via email which we should of read but looking back over my emails all I received was the booking confirmation which didn’t have the information in it.

Reception is limited so if you’re wanting to use your phone then it’s hit and miss, if you aren’t bothered then it’s lovely. There is no WiFi (personally it didn’t bother us)

The Clearing non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This is a gem of a campsite for those who value secluded peace and simple facilities. We were pleasantly surprised at how quiet the site was in the middle of August. We took a pitch in the Clearing, which was more spacious than we expected from the pictures. A good mix of sun and shade. There there was only one other occupant in the Clearing, and no more than a handful in the Meadow. The showers, loos and washing up places were all perfectly adequate (though obviously there may be queuing at busier times), with plenty of hot water. Lovely walks directly into the woods, and well located for many local places of interest.

Littlewood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (wild)

Liked I really liked the tranquility, the birds in the trees, the clean toilets and showers, the drinking water. I particularly liked the lack of any type of entertainment, the lack of a shop, the lack of football goals, the lack of a play area etc.

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
