  • Quiet, peaceful rural site with stunning views over Eskdale Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Wast Water; 25 minutes to Scafell Pike
  • Pick your own pitch; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Flushing toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside). This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful campsite. The set up was perfect, with everything you could possibly need from hot high pressured showers, a sheltered kitchen area with some chairs to sit and eat, along with a fire pit to enjoy next to your tent.

The views are fantastic and location is great.

We were welcomed with a friendly face and lots of useful information. We got ourselves into a bit of a predicament (stuck in the mud) and the owner was so kind to come and find us and pulled us out of our misery!

Highly recommend :)

Liked Great host and a nice quiet spot, plenty of facilities and an array of spare equipment if anything is forgotten (tent pegs in my case). Will be returning at some point.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The location is gorgeous, the welcoming flowers from the garden as you drive in is just the perfect reflection of the warm welcome that awaits you from Jonnty the owner of the site. Pitch sizes are great and the beautiful big field for the kids and adults to play games in is great. There are also very friendly sheep that the children made friends with. Loads of activities on your doorstep and you will never not have something great to do with Jonnty’s long list of excellent recommendations! Free electric charging point was a life saver and a nice hot shower after climbing Scarfell Pike was bliss! Can’t wait to return for another visit. Thanks Jonnty, we had a blast, your kindness has made life long friends in our family!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Pitch was level and tent peg went in easily, toilets were great, lots of handy stuff was available (e.g, fire pits/wood for burning, chairs). Lovely location. Host greeted us as we arrived and provided lots of useful information.

Disliked It's a relatively small campsite and was a bit too crowded for our taste (there was less than 4 meters space between us and out neighbours). Music stopped at 10pm but could still hear lots of talking etc. If you wouldn't mind having lots of people around, there wouldn't be anything to dislike about the place.

Local attractions

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
