  • Peaceful, well-maintained and family-run park in a central setting
  • Safe direct access link to the Shropshire Union Canal for strolls
  • Fish at three fishing lakes for a fee; bar/bistro two minutes' stroll
Cheshire countryside, anyone? In a setting that's quite rightly been pointed out as central to pretty much anywhere? Easily sorted when pitching up at Sunny Side Touring Park. Set in green countryside with loads of open space, Sunny Side is central indeed: it's about 20 minutes by car to the Welsh border from here, 45 minutes to Wrexham, 50 to Shrewsbury and Chester, an hour to Alton Towers, and an hour and 15 minutes to both Liverpool and Manchester. And if you're after a peaceful base where you don't want to wander far at all? Also easily sorted, as Sunny Side's Nantwich setting is metres from the Shropshire Union Canal for spectacularly scenic strolls or bike rides along the water. There's also a bar/bistro a couple minutes' stroll away. On site, there are three fishing lakes where guests can fish for an extra cost. They stock up to 40-pound carp and catfish. Sunny Side is family run, and allows only a handful of pitches on site to keep its quiet and relaxed vibe. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed: sort supplies a couple of miles away in the friendly little village of Audlem, where there are restaurants and pubs as well as shops. A handy utilities room on site gives guests access to a washing machine, washing-up sinks, a microwave and a kettle.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, lake view)

Liked Location, staff, walks and general amenities. This is our third stay and we do like this campsite. The Sunnyside part is excellent.

Disliked We paid £50 a night for what was advertised as a Deluxe adults-only pitch. Instead, we were placed on an unused lodge pitch beside the fishing lake at the adjoining Coole Acres Fishery. Unfortunately, it wasn’t set up for motorhomes or caravans – there was no proper water connection or grey waste drain. I had to unhook everything and go off in search of a tap just to refill.

The pitch also wasn’t managed, which meant children were constantly wandering through our area to fish. Some left their gear, beer cans, and rubbish behind for days. We usually tether our dogs on the grass in front of our pitch, but this wasn’t possible with people sitting there, and at one point I even had words with a grandfather who admitted they hadn’t paid to fish.

Part of the reason for our trip was to view the Coole Acres lodges with a retirement purchase in mind. Sadly, when we went across to look at the supposedly idyllic setting, we were really put off – the lakeside was littered with rubbish, and half a dozen teenagers and men were hanging around shirtless, drinking beer. That’s not at all what we had in mind for our retirement.

On top of all that, the pitch was also a fair walk from the toilets and elsan point. Overall, the whole stay fell far short of “deluxe” and was very disappointing, especially given the premium price.

From the manager: Thank you for your review Mike
I'm a little confused as the adult only lake view pitches are advertised as adult only lake view NOT DELUXE! And it does say that there is only water and electric IT IS NOT ADVERTISED AS A FULLY SERVICED PITCH
The price is with fishing included in my opinion and lots who have stayed there the pitches are clean with great views over the lake with water fountains its very tranquil. It was our annual charity dog show the weekend you stayed so it was really busy. I do remember you as i seen you filling up from the tap near the office Sorry if that coursed to much disturbance for you. Other customers there filled there barrels from the tap on the pitch. We was under the impression you already bought a holiday home else were. From what i checked on the lake there was an older gentleman with a mobility scooter that also had a pitch who was fishing And the fact that he left rubbish is unacceptable but they must of picked it up because when Phil our grounds man went round litter picking there was no rubbish WE KEEP BOTH SUNNYSIDE AND COOLE ACRES FISHERY MAINTAINED TO A VERY HIGH STANDERED WE WORK DAILY ON INPROVING AND INVESTING TO KEEP THAT HIGH STANDERD
Hope you visit us again as we value all our customers

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely surroundings, toilet facilities kept clean and tidy, pitches quite close together but were all ok, tent had to face the Stag statue in the middle of the field (Ive no idea why!) Small shop, food van open weekends. Lovely walks along the canal and to the marina, on site pub a little walk away.

Disliked The patrol by the owner at 9pm in his car around the campsite!!! Kids had to be back at tents for 9pm and not allowed anywhere else after this time, which is quite early on summer nights.
The amount of toads out and about at night and having to get them evacuated from awnings of tents each night, not what you want to do after a nice relaxing day, be on toad patrol!
Park is a grand title for the 1980's pub tree with a slide and 2 swings attached!

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay
Unfortunatley we have to take into consideration all other guest staying on sight that don't want kids running round all night. We have to take all customers into consideration even though its lights nights.. There is still safety of kids especially younger ones That's why our rules say kids must be back at there own pitch at 9pm.
Most customers love the 80's swings But we do plan on removing it after the summer
hope we see you all again

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch (adults only, lake view)

Liked Size of pitch. Nice view of lake.

Disliked Paid a premium price for adult only pitch, only to have children running up and down by the lake in front of pitch and kindly leaving their rubbish. No signs to advise adult only area. Only two ladies showers and three toilets to accommodate 90 combined pitches.

Local attractions

The canal and a public footpath alongside are steps from the site. From Nantwich, stroll the couple of miles along the level canal towpath for views over town and the Cheshire countryside, passing the Chester Road viaduct and many moored and cruising narrowboats (to get truly envious, lurk around the marina at Basin End). A couple of pubs at Audlem overlook the canal if/when you require a pitstop. To dive into all things canal and have a natter on the same with knowledgeable types, drop into the Nantwich Canal Centre within 10 minutes' drive. You could also have mightily peaceful potters around the town's shops and wine bars, or the market that runs most days. The leisure centre has an outdoor saltwater pool for dips. Another market town is at Whitchurch, 20 minutes' drive away and two miles from the Welsh border. It's well worth a wander to see its 100+ listed buildings, and to bag foodie supplies from the speciality shops in town: cheese and pork pies are the top picks to hunt down here. From Whitchurch, you can take the train to Manchester, reachable in an hour to the north, or Shrewsbury, half an hour south.
