  • Northumberland wild camping site with views of the Cheviot Hills
  • Linhope Spout Waterfall 20 minutes’ drive; Bamburgh Castle 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; dark skies for stargazing; fishing pond nearby
Who says you can’t have it all? Whether you’re into seaside breaks, hiking excursions or fishing holidays, staying at Low Hedgeley puts you within a half-hour drive of all sorts of excellent ways to fill your days. This peaceful wild camping site, on a Northumberland farm that’s been in the same family since the late 18th century, sits just south of Wooler (10 minutes’ drive). Look around you: the diverse landscape includes heathlands, moors and woodland, not to mention the Cheviot Hills to the west. Incidentally, that’s a good area for a hike, with places like Hedgehope Hill (fairly challenging, rewarded with remarkable views from the top) and the Cheviot itself (actually an extinct volcano). The hills form the northern edges of Northumberland National Park, where there are more trails, dark skies for stargazing and Roman ruins, including Hadrian’s Wall, which runs along the southern border. If you prefer to walk against a dramatic coastal background, the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) delivers – and how, with the long-distance Northumberland Coast Path going past places like Dunstanburgh Castle, Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island Causeway. As for the fishing, at Branton Ponds (5 minutes or a 20-minute walk) you can combine angling with a spot of birdwatching. Facilities at the site are slightly on the spartan side (there’s a portable toilet, but no hot water). However, the views and the proximity to so many spectacular spots ought to redress the balance. Dogs are welcome; if you like animals, you can make friends with the resident cows and sheep, and perhaps get lucky spotting oystercatchers or otters on the banks of the River Breamish, which flows through the farm.

What customers say

Tranquil, remote spot with stunning country vistas. Campers rave about welcoming owners, good-sized, tidy sites & clean loos. Basic but charming honesty shop. Some want more picnic tables or permanent toilets. Minor gripes (dog barks, mud) can't dampen the good vibes. Most keen to return!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location, immaculately kept site and lots of space. The owner was so lovely and made us feel very welcome.

The views are gorgeous, and we were very lucky to have a clear night. We sat under star lit skies, could clearly see the Milky Way, and loads of shooting stars... a perfect night.

We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This is a proper campsite, it has everything you need. I also liked how you could pitch anywhere you liked. I was shocked to find a little store on site of fresh produce AND pizza being cooked there but it was delicious. I came with my friends, however, this would be an ideal place to take my son. Will definitely be returning in the future :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice big open space with lots of room, and great views. The owner Harry seems a nice friendly chap as well. Grass is nice and flat, and trimmed so perfect for driving on and pitching a tent.

Disliked Nowhere to wash up, or hot water available.
Portaloo’s were very smelly inside.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The quietness of this secluded site, friendly and helpful owner. Well cut grassy area for pitching tents on. We will be back here again I’m sure, thank you for this little gem of a site. It is a simple and basic site with and a tap but that’s all we really needed and a space to lay our heads, hence the tent.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This has to be the best wild camping experience and pitch I’ve stayed on in the UK. Wonderful views, peace and quiet and all round relaxing. The owner of the land is such a good bloke. Site offers a nice little shop with fresh eggs on a morning (honesty box)

Local attractions

Linhope Spout Waterfall (20 minutes’ drive), in Northumberland National Park, is a dramatic cascade plunging down moss-covered rocks into a pool. On your walk there (from Hartside Farm), you might see red squirrels, red grouse and curlews. Built in the Middle Ages, Bamburgh Castle (35 minutes) looms large over the vast sandy expanse of Bamburgh Beach. Check out the elegant wooden ceiling in the King’s Hall, admire the collection of armour and weaponry, then make your way to the Battery terrace for views across the water to the Farne Islands. The centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed (35 minutes) is completely surrounded by ramparts built in the Elizabethan age. After a walk along the top, visit the Barracks and Main Guard, home of the The King's Own Scottish Borderers museum and an art collection.
