Grass pitch

  • Off-grid camping on hilly grassland near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Filey and Cayton Bay; 20 minutes to Bridlington
  • Hillside or level pop-up camping pitches with showers and toilets
Looking for an off-grid adventure staying on a site with magnificent views of the Yorkshire coastline? Quarry Hill Campsite might be the right spot for you – it's set on nine acres of open grassland and hillside, and with many more acres on hand for you to explore. Yes, this family-run site is off grid but it does have a good clutch of facilities, including spotless separate showers and toilet in a hand-built wooden amenities shack (there are emergency sockets in there for charging devices, by the way), as well as a casual snack bar and alfresco bench seating (both weather dependent) by reception. Barbecues are allowed as long as the weather conditions are not too windy or dry. It's worth noting that the ground is not completely flat here, but the tradeoff for that hilly location is some excellent Yorkshire coastline views. From various points around the site, you can see Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, as well as the surfing beach at Cayton Bay. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to share your North Yorkshire camping break here, and they're also allowed on Cayton Bay beach all year round. If you’re walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way and don’t have a car, buses to Bridlington and Filey are a short walk away.

What customers say

Great reviews for stunning views, spotless facilities & friendly owners. Kids' play area and games tent are big hits. Cafe's delicious and well-priced. Peaceful, good value, though some pitches are sloped and ground hard. Highly recommended!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Really enjoyed our stay here! Gorgeous views, kids loved the games tent and the nicest couple you could ever meet. Snack bar was greatly appreciated given it rained on the night of our stay so we sacked off the hotdogs we were going to have and had pizzas from the snack bar instead. The prices were so reasonable that we didn't bother putting stove on for a brew in the morn, wee just bought one, along with some amazing pancakes with fruit, chocolate, ice cream and cream instead of our boring cereal!
Shower was lovely and clean and was hot and powerful. Close to loads of beaches. Will definitely return.

Disliked Nothing apart from the hard ground, which they do openly warn about but being a novice camper I didn't know what 'good' pegs were but the lovely bloke told me exactly which ones to buy for next time and assisted me in using mine when I was struggling!

Liked Lovely stay at Quarry Hill. Weather wasn’t always kind but that meant we made good use of the games tent and the food available on site was delicious. Views in the morning were spectacular. The family who run this site were so friendly, we really enjoyed our stay.

Disliked The ground is really hard so remember strong pegs!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We loved absolutely everything about the campsite. It was such a beautiful, peaceful, well maintained and clean site and the staff were incredible. They went above and beyond to help us and were ever so friendly, professional and attentive to our needs. The man who operated the site (on his quad- but we forget his name!! Sorry) is ever so lovely and was so patient with our very curious and inquisitive lad, Olly! Olly wouldn’t leave him alone but he was so kind and gracious with Olly and invested a lot of time into talking with him despite the fact he was busy!! The views are amazing, there’s a cute little park and snack bar on site and a brilliant ‘deer hunt’ at 9pm led by the operators of the site which is a lovely little extra to get the kids knackered before bed. We were fans of the big field at the top as we were invited to let our two cocker spaniels to run wild on it as it was acres and acres of encoded land. This was a lovely gesture because the dogs needed a good run so it was handy to have access to that. We were located nearby many local attractions that made for fantastic nights out including Clayton Bay and Playdale Farm Park. Nearby was also a local Tesco superstore which we found especially helpful. We will definitely return!

Local attractions

Long-distance walkers, this is a clever overnight stop as the site has direct access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, and there are bracing hikes along the headlands at Flamborough Head (half an hour’s drive). The North York Moors National Park (15 minutes) is also a hub for hiking and cycling, with many, many trails crossing the moorland. If you’re intent on exploring North Yorkshire’s beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Dog-owners and surfers can make their way to canine-friendly and remote Cayton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), while Bridlington (20 minutes) has amusement arcades and is the departure point for high-speed boat trips along the coastline. Filey (10 minutes) is known for its quiet family-friendly beach as well as a bird garden, and Scarborough (20 minutes) has a sandy swathe backed by a castle and museums. Kids part of your holiday plans? Let them get up close to cuddle the alpacas and ponies at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), or challenge them to races on the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). And if they’re playing up, you could always lose them (temporarily of course) in the seasonal maze at Great Ryedale (15 minutes).
