Holkham hall

  • Dog-friendly site in the grounds of the Holkham Hall estate
  • Within walking distance of Holkham beach and coastal walks and cycles
  • Discount for the hall, walled garden and Holkham Stories Experience
Who’s to refuse a stay with festival vibes in the grounds of the grand Holkham Hall estate, which was built by an 18th-century earl? Holkham Hall is a pop-up site in north Norfolk that has very much a unique setting, surrounded by 25,000 acres of sloping parkland, an 18th-century Palladian-style house and walled garden. Sure, the main attraction might be easy access and discounted entry to the hall, walled garden and Holkham Stories Experience (which gives a run-down on the full history of the estate). However, the dog-friendly site is also in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just two miles from the Norfolk coastline, where there are some ridiculously scenic coastal walking and cycling routes. Take the half an hour’s walk to Holkham beach and explore the soft sand, dunes and lagoon. Enroute is the Holkham National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ walk), where there is plenty of wildlife hiding out in the pines, creeks and saltmarsh. Back at base – if the gorgeous estate can be called that – there’s a family-friendly festival atmosphere (a beach break with bunting, yes please). On the estate, guests can make use of the woodland adventure play area, ropes course, cycle and boat hire, gift shop and café, as well as a bunch of events geared towards families. There are plenty of pubs with beer gardens, shops and other places to eat in and around Wells-next-the-Sea too, which is 40 minutes’ walk from Holkham Hall.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The pitch and view were stunning. The facilities were better than expected. The daily food truck was different each day, and beer truck again unexpected. The staff polite, warm and egar to help.

Disliked Wasps, but that's not something the site staff should deal with. Also we had noisey sheep in a near by field for a few nights.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Location was good for visiting the area.

Disliked On two mornings toilets were out of action but fixed fairly quickly. Huge space and if I’d known I’d have opted for a non electric pitch to have more space. It was also quite expensive for what it was. Marketing shows Holkham Hall but you’re a 10 minute walk away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Free tractor tour of the grounds was lovely.
The deer park was beautiful.
Amazing coastline and stunning beach.

Disliked The pitches are in rows on 9m square plots. I’ve never camped on non-electric sites where you have to be in rows. It meant we could not be with our family group and it felt cramped. I was basically sleeping next to strangers. I could hear them snoring. The plot size with no gaps inbetween put us much closer than other campsites would normally allow due to fire safety regulations. The site is vast! There was loads of empty space but they just had these rows. I found it weird and annoying.

There was not enough showers… people were queuing. and the toilets had tiny small sinks so no where to brush your teeth and wash your face.

There is a fantastic kids park but the grounds are so vast it was 1.1miles away from where we were camped. On one day the Holkham Hall parking staff let us pull up in the car to take the kids to the park and grab a coffee from the little shop nearby (we did walk it a few times of course but you know sometimes everyone is tired). The following day we tried to do the same but were directed to the other end of the estate to park in the main carpark and made to pay £6 for the pleasure. I explained we had just come to the park from the campsite (rather than visiting the actual house and grounds) and they could see that we had 5 young children with us, but they were having none of it stating the house and grounds are completely separate from the campsite. This really annoyed me.

I prefer campsites which have a small shop for essentials there was nothing here.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The grounds of Holkham Hall

Disliked The rows of tents and designated bays. For a non electric pitch would have preferred to choose my own spot.

Local attractions

Oh, to be on a steam train huffing and puffing past the coast, a hillfort and a disused railway platform… the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway (10 minutes’ drive) runs between Wells-next-the-Sea and Walsingham and takes in all of the above sights. You might be lucky enough to spot some seals along your coastal walks, but if you want to dedicate a trip exactly to that, check out the Beans Seal Trips (25 minutes). The Burnham Overy Footpath - Norfolk Coastal Path (10 minutes) is one of the aforementioned splendid coastal walks in the area and snakes through salt marshes and sand dunes. With the likes of crabbing and fishing trips in Cromer (50 minutes), fields of lavender to see at Norfolk Lavender (half an hour) and abbey ruins for hide and seek games at Creake Abbey (15 minutes), to occupy you it’s likely you’ll have a splendid itinerary sorted out before you even depart.
