  • Peaceful Shropshire site with views over forests and hills
  • A five-minute drive from Church Stretton; half an hour from Ludlow
  • Equestrian services for horse owners; five minutes' walk to a pub
If you’re a fan of waking up to splendid rural views and spending time in the local area hiking in the hills, wild swimming or looking around old fortresses, Barn Field Farm Camping will sound like a real treat. This small and family-run site is up in Shropshire's Stretton Hills and has the views to prove it – settle down for a stay here if you fancy waking up to green vistas of tree-covered hills… It's also handily located close to plenty of local amenities: the nearest pub is a five-minute walk away, while the shops and cafés of All Stretton village centre are a breezy 10 minutes away. Kids, dogs and horses (that's right, horses) are welcome at Barn Field Farm Camping; Chris, the guy who owns this place, is a renowned horse whisperer, so do get in touch for a natter about all things equine. These hills are best admired in the saddle (whether that's on two wheels or on horseback) or on foot, so make sure you come along with a plan to explore the surrounds. With no electric on site, firepits are welcome (with wood purchased from the site for a fee) and there's a washing-up area that makes dealing with the aftermath a doddle. If you fancy leaving the cooking to someone else for the night, ring up a takeaway or stroll into All Stretton for a sit-down meal.

Granny’s Patch non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely location with excellent views of the hills. Pitches were well mowed - level and easy to pitch up. Good location with local pub a 10 min walk away.

Disliked The cleanliness of the site was a disgrace. Rubbish was strewn over some of the pitches. The kitchen facilities were dirty and filled with rubbish. The shower block electricity wasn't working, so no hot water and only one of the showers was hooked up to the water supply anyway. The chemical toilet didn't have any of the blue disinfectant (either run out or the pump not working) and the sluice mechanism was stuck open so the smell in there was gut wrenching. No sign of the campsite owner - I tried calling twice and left a message, but no response. The noise of the trains were tolerable compared to everything else. It could be that the campsite is run well during the main holiday season and everything is kept in order, but my experience was terrible to be honest.

Very basic facilities but more than enough for 2 nights stay.

Granny’s Patch non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Fantastic location, very scenic and loved how the pitches were mowed out. Great access to Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd for walking and an excellent local pub

Disliked The train track! No mention of this anywhere in the listing and we didn't see the others reviews mentioning it till after we'd booked, but we thought surely it can't be that bad. Friday night the freight trains were running pretty much all night, constantly waking us up. Saturday night they weren't as frequent so we had a better night's sleep. Facilities are very basic

Local attractions

Those days where you’d rather not go too far will be well-spent in Church Stretton, either nosing around the Church Stretton town centre (five minutes' drive) or doing some good shooting on the golf course at the Church Stretton Golf Club (five minutes' drive/20 minutes' walk). If exploring out over lush landscapes and getting your blood pumping sounds like an excellent way to begin your holiday, the reward at the end of your hike in the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (10 minutes) could be a wild dip in the reservoir. Getting to know a little of the past life around here might also pique your interest. If so, the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (10 minutes) recreates 19th-century farm life with working heavy horses and historic house tours. Charles Dawin's Birthplace (30 minutes) is another interesting visit, of course. If that’s not enough history, Ludlow Castle (30 minutes) and Powis Castle and Garden (45 minutes) both provide a glimpse at medieval life. Led by a falconer, the experiences at Battlefield Falconry Centre (25 minutes) will also let you try bird handling or accompany a hawk on a journey through the trees.
