  • Peaceful Leicestershire site on a rural hillside
  • Leicester city centre and Rutland Water both 20 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A47; surrounded by tree belt for quiet and privacy
The centre of Leicester is only about a 20-minute drive from Fox’s Furrow – and yet this site’s immediate surroundings are properly peaceful and rural, with fields and natural countryside views all around. The beauty of all this, of course, is that you can have a nicely varied stay here if you like, perhaps pedalling along National Cycle Route 63 one day (it’s about a mile away) and then heading into the city to visit the National Space Centre the next. There’s a bus stop just under a mile away in the village of Houghton on the Hill if you’d rather travel by public transport. Also in the village are a couple of pubs, a village shop, a pharmacy and a fish and chip shop – all of it handily a short walk away across the fields (or a couple of minutes in the car). Getting in, out and all around should be straightforward here as the site is about a quarter of a mile from the A47; there’s no hint of the main road while on site, though, as the place has a very natural feel to it and is surrounded by a tree belt that provides plenty of privacy as well as acting as a home to local wildlife. In keeping with this rural setting, facilities have been kept to a minimum here – the essentials are covered, however, with a wifi connection, a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities housed in a very stylishly decorated classic shepherd’s hut.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Great peaceful location, toilet and showers were spotless. WiFi was very good. Couldn’t fault my stay. Hosts Saffron and Glen use a contactless system where you book in when you arrive by replying to their warm welcoming text message, which makes everything clear and then let them know when you are leaving, very easy and if there were any issues I could contact them directly. Will plan to stay again

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: We loved the quiet, rural very pretty location, we were there early and got a nice pitch on the bottom right which meant we had plenty of our own space. The glamping pods looked really good too. Everything tastefully done. We walked over the fields to the village and ate at the dog friendly pub where we met our daughter who's studying in Leicester which is a stones throw away but you'd never imagine it as so rural! She dropped us back and what a pretty scene to come back to, the whole place was prettily lit with fairylights, again tasteful and gave the place a glow, we loved it. Plus owners very responsive to any messages and were more than happy for our daughter to park up for a bit and have a cuppa. Thank you, great stay.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: The wifi actually worked
The setting was nice but thats its.

Disliked: The site was very small and parts showing it still being built. We booked a week or so in advance and only after we arrived and setup that we where told due to overnight freezing temps that the water would be turned off to the toilets, showers and taps.

From the manager: Hi there, thank you for your feedback and I’m so glad you liked the setting of our site 😊 I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed about us having to turn the water off overnight. We were monitoring the weather forecast closely and unfortunately due to the unforeseen freezing conditions we had to turn off the water off between 11pm and 7am to avoid any issues with burst pipes etc. Thank you again for staying. We take all feedback on board.

Great place to stay with great facilities.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful location with the best shower! The washrooms were very quirky. Staff were keeping us informed about different things during our stay, which was great. The site is a short walk to Houghton on the Hill, where we had a lovely pub lunch.

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: An absolutely delightful campsite, as a solo traveller I felt very safe and secure. The converted shepherds hut shower/toilet is fantastic - super clean and that has to be one of the best campsite showers I've ever used! It's literally hotel quality in terms of pressure/temperature.
It's basic, as in there isn't a shop, but that was made clear on the website. And the wifi connection is really good.

Local attractions

Getting out to see more of your rural surroundings should be easy enough here, as there are some great walks in the vicinity, along with those bike rides on National Cycle Route 63. Rutland Water (20 minutes’ drive) is another good place for a walk or a bike ride (there’s a path that goes all the way round the lake), and you can also play golf, try your hand at sailing or bounce across the inflatable aqua park. If the kids are keen to meet cute animals, head along to Windmill Farm Park (15 minutes) for indoor and outdoor animals, play areas and a café. Bird on the Hand Falconry Experiences (15 minutes) makes a great day out for those keen to get up close to the big birds. Over in Leicester (20 minutes) there are plenty of options for a day out (especially if you need rainy-day activities) – the city is home to the National Space Centre as well as the Retro Computer Museum and King Richard III Visitor Centre.
