  • Basic family-friendly campsite in the Derbyshire Dales
  • Crich Tramway and Matlock Bath within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly site with links to Midshires Way and Cromford Canal walks
Peaceful strolls, Peak District adventures and fab rural scenery are some of what makes Hankin Farm Campsite a peachy holiday base. And peachy it is indeed… this basic, family-friendly site in the Derbyshire Dales has splendid views over Crich Stand and the added bonus of being 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park for those of you who are up for lots of outdoor exploration. This farm is between the villages of Alderwasley and Whatstandwell and 10 minutes' drive from Belper's numerous shops and other amenities, so coffee shops, pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are all well within reach. The nearest railway station is a mile away in Whatstandwell, making it possible to get to Hankin Farm Campsite without a car. Peaceful walks are part of the local area’s charm, including connections to the Midshires Way, the Cromford Canal and Shining Cliff Woods. That isn’t all though, as all sorts of kid-pleasing activities are very close at hand too, including Crich's well-known tramway museum, Matlock Bath's various amusements and theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom. The roomy and dog-friendly pitches have access to separate male and female showers and toilets, plus a washing-up area. And as long as you use common sense and follow instructions from the site’s staff, barbecues and campfires are permitted on the pitches.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Just had a pleasant stay on this small working farm site. Access via the farm yard, so some bends to navigate. Very friendly welcome. Sloping pitches, so levelling blocks needed. There are showers and toilet blocks, no fuss but functional. Water available for vans etc and waste emptying if required. We walked 3 miles into Cromford along the canal towpath which was beautiful. Ate at The Greyhound pub.

Disliked: Not a moan, but a comment: the road to the site is narrow, with passing places so be aware. We missed the turn from the main road as there's no sineage for Hankin Farm. There are 2 brown signs for other sites though!

Liked: Beautifully situated campsite, surrounded by nature. Working farm with cows and sheep. Dogs must be on a lead at all times.
Greeted by friendly owner, who told us what we needed to know. Were checked on later in the day to make sure all was well. Easy walk to the Family Tree for drinks and food (GF). Basic site but it's all we needed. Didn't use the showers.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Quiet location, not busy and everyone respectful. The owner came round to check on everyone at the end of the day. Basic facilities but everything you need and well kept. Little touches like the washing up bowls, sponges, washing up liquid and toilet roll very helpful if anyone forgets anything. We had a lovely walk across the fields and also down to the canal towpath.

Disliked: Motorbike noise was a bit much during the day but it was quiet when it got later in the day. Didn’t stop us enjoying the site but I feel sorry for the locals!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: On arrival we were greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed us in and showed us where we could park up for the night. We were treated to amazing views, with plenty of space and we loved how quiet it was. Our neighbour for the night was very friendly and considerate. The food truck on site is delicious! And saved me from cooking for the night which was a bonus. Shower/toilet was clean and tidy with plenty of toilet roll. Phone signal was really good getting 5G most of our stay. Will definitely return!! 😊

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Plot out the way to the Peak District… will it be fish and chips by the river in Matlock Bath (10 minutes' drive) or taking the cable car to the Heights of Abraham’s underground caverns (10 minutes) that gets your attention first? Gulliver's Kingdom (10 minutes) is just outside the town too for those of you with kids tagging along. Places that bring a little of history to your holiday are easy to find around here. There are period buildings and vintage trams ready for boarding at Crich Tramway (10 minutes), tours and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cromford Mills (10 minutes) and the Nine Ladies (25 minutes) stone circle to see. Belper (10 minutes) is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site – so you'll be well-set to learn more about the Peak District's industrial heritage – and for other interesting little places, Wirksworth (10 minutes) has a lively marketplace, heritage centre and a museum with the bones of old villagers. For those of you with an artistic streak, Denby Pottery Village (15 minutes) runs pottery painting in its craft studio, or you could look inside the farm shop and factory shop to see what goodies are available to take home.
