Pitchup.com picks its Top Five places to stay near Gleneagles
Golf fans rejoice – golf widows/widowers despair! The greatest tournament in match play golf, the Ryder Cup, takes place at Gleneagles in Scotland this year (September 23-28).
Outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com has some suggestions for sites that will suit the ‘hole’ party down to a tee…
Loch Tay Highland Lodges, Aberfeldy
With luxurious pods, premium wigwams and well-equipped, contemporary woodland cabins this superb site is just 24 miles from Gleneagles. Non-golfers can head the same amount of miles in different directions and find Blair Castle and the National Wallace Monument, or go shopping in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. Golfers can spoil their loved one with a gorgeous meal at the on-site Boathouse restaurant – or fish for their own supper!
Price: Three nights (September 22-25) cost £240 in a woodland cabin (based on two people sharing).
Nydie Caravan and Camping Site, St Andrews
A little further away (about 40 miles) from Gleneagles, but well worth the extra ‘drive’ is Nydie Caravan and Camping Site. Here guests get to stay in roomy insulated wigwams, called ‘woodwams’. It’s six miles to Dundee for some shopping and it’s got views of that other famous golf course, St Andrews, which is close by.
Price: Seven nights (September 22-29) in a ‘woodwam’ cost £455 for up to four people.
Grand Eagles, Aberfeldy
For motorhomers, this is a great option, as it’s less than three miles from Gleneagles. The site is very spacious and offers a new shower block, laundry room and endless space in which all the family can play and relax. Away from Grand Eagles, non-golfers can shop in Perth and Dunfermline; visit the oldest (Glenturret at Crieff) and the smallest (Edradour at Pitlochry) distilleries in Scotland, or take walking trails along Glen Devon. The village of Auchterarder is a mile away, where snooker fans may spot famous resident Stephen Hendry.
Price: Three nights (September 22-25) cost £585 for up to four people in an optional-electric pitch.
