You can’t get much closer to California’s Kaweah River than Birdwatch Cottage, the comfy accommodation at Rio Sierra River Resort, set on the riverbanks at Three Rivers and only 10 minutes’ drive from Sequoia National Park in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
This custom-built, two-bedroom cottage features a well-equipped modern kitchen, a bathroom, laundry facilities and a leafy backyard with a barbecue in the picnic area – just the waterfront spot to settle back and watch hummingbirds flit around their feeders.
This is a peaceful base for anyone looking for privacy amid spectacular scenery for a few days or a couple of weeks. Bring family, bring friends, travel alone… no matter which, you’ll soon feel right at home here.
You’ll never have a dull moment: take long hikes in Sequoia National Park, or channel your inner digital nomad and work at your computer overlooking the river. Try out the restaurants and browse the stores in Three Rivers, or hang out at Rio Sierra River Resort’s private river beach, just five minutes’ walk from the cottage – all guests have a free pass to the beach, which includes parking and a restroom/changing room at the hotel.

- No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
- Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
- At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.
- Bookings must not consist of more than 1 different households.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- No charcoal barbecues allowed.
- No electric barbecues allowed.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Rio Sierra River Resort’s beach (five minutes’ stroll) faces a gorgeous, tree-shaded stretch of Kaweah River. In this spectacular natural playground, you can chill on loungers in the sun, picnic with your feet in the water, stargaze at night, do yoga and go fishing.
All too tame for you? Get your heart beating faster on whitewater-rafting adventures from Kaweah Whitewater Adventures (also five minutes), where guides offer family fun tours, mid-level rapids or advanced thrill-seeker expeditions. You might also like to explore the surrounding valleys and forests on mountain bikes or horseback.
In Sequoia National Park (10 minutes’ drive) you can investigate The Giant Forest (50 minutes), drive through the Tunnel Log (15 minutes) and take in Panoramic Point Overlook (90 minutes) for stunning views over Hume Lake to the glacial Kings Canyon and High Sierra peaks. Got spare energy? Follow hiking trails to the General Sherman Tree (an hour, one of the world’s largest trees) or scramble up the flight of stone steps to the granite dome of Moro Rock (also an hour).
