  • Peaceful park next to vineyards on the banks of the Mokelumne River
  • Direct river access for fishing, boating and swimming
  • 20 minutes' drive from Lodi and its wineries
A vineyard on one side, a river on the other… and in the middle plenty of space to settle by the campfire with a glass of local vino and (if you’re lucky) a fish you hooked yourself – what a collection of good things there is at Deltas Lodi Wine Country Camping. This peaceful park is right on the banks of the Mokelumne River, with direct access to the water for fishing, launching boats or taking a freshwater swim. Barbecues and campfires are both decreed to be excellent ideas around here, with picnic tables and fire rings provided to help such proceedings. Those vineyards next door (and the park’s name, of course) may just give you a little clue that you’re in California wine country here, and well placed for tours and tastings at the wineries of the Lodi area (of particular interest to the red wine drinkers among you, as the region’s growing a bit of a rep for its quaffable zinfandels and cab sauvs). Lodi town, 20 minutes away, is a handy hub for tasting rooms, and also your most convenient place for restaurants, supermarkets and other amenities. Not in the mood for wine? Kayak trips and a watersports lake are down in town, and you’re almost next door to the Cosumnes River Preserve, where there’s some fab hiking and birdwatching.

Local attractions

‘The zinfandel capital of the world’ they call it, and with good reason – Lodi’s wineries are responsible for about 40% of the output of California’s signature grape. Sample a whole range of them (along with other reds and some zingy whites) by dropping in on some of the 85 or so wineries along the Lodi Wine Trail. Bike cabs and limo tours can be had instead if you’d rather delegate driving duties. In between the vineyards are lots of open areas to explore – a fab way to spend a day is to pack a picnic (bottle of wine optional) and head out into the Cosumnes River Preserve (a couple of minutes’ drive away) for a walk through the forest, marshes and lagoons; you’re likely to spot all sorts of birds as you roam. There are boat launches in the preserve if you’ve got your own canoes or kayaks to launch; if not, head to Headwaters Kayaks (20 minutes’ drive) for guided paddles or to hire canoes, paddleboards or pedal boats. Lodi Lake Park (15 minutes) is another option for watersports, walks or bike rides, and you’ll be guaranteed to spot wildlife with a visit to Micke Grove Zoo (25 minutes).
