- Rural stays on a working family farm a mile from the Virginia coast
- Secluded beach a few minutes' drive away; 45 minutes to Yorktown
- Petting zoo, retro games, fire rings and swimming pool on site
Countryside retreat or coastal getaway? Mix the two together in one fabulous location at Blanchard Farm, a working farm in rural Virginia just over a mile from the coast at Haven Beach. This is an operation that’s grown out of the owners’ desire for a deeper connection to the land, and they’re now keen to share their blossoming business with guests who’d like to experience the same.
Staying on a fully operational farm that’s home to around 300 animals (pigs, poultry, goats and rabbits) means you can meet a variety of livestock while you're here, and help out with some essential tasks if you want to. The petting zoo is a popular attraction with children, as are the rope swings for some traditional outdoor fun.
There are also more adventurous activities available for older guests, including ATV and dirt bike trails, a shooting range, an archery range and an axe throwing challenge. Bringing all ages together are other facilities including an above-ground swimming pool, an open field for games, retro games like horseshoes and redneck golf and hammocks to chill out among the trees. Fire rings have been provided for evenings under the stars, with firewood available to buy at the farm and the option to have someone set up your fire for you (for an extra charge).
All of this provision for rural relaxation means you'll probably feel like you’re well away from modern life – but handily the small town of Mathews is a five-minute drive away for shops and places to eat.

Local attractions
There’s plenty to do on the farm, but don’t miss the chance to get out to the coast while you’re here. Haven Beach (three minutes’ drive) is a real hidden gem that rarely gets busy despite its gorgeous setting with soft sand, clear water and palm trees.
Elsewhere along the coast you could take a walk along the boardwalk to see New Point Comfort Lighthouse (20 minutes) – said to be particularly lovely at sunset – or visit the wonderfully named Fort Nonsense (15 minutes).
If you’d like to get further out into Chesapeake Bay, find sailing trips and other watersports in towns like Gloucester Point or Yorktown (both 45 minutes). While you’re in that area, learn a little about its past at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and the Colonial National Historical Park. En route, look out for a couple of vineyards where you can stop in for a bottle of something local to take back to the farm.
