Bells Marina and Resort

- Small fishing and boating resort on Lake Marion in South Carolina
- Beach 10 minutes’ drive; Santee National Wildlife Refuge 35 minutes
- Restaurant; grocery and fishing tackle store; boat slips for rental
Eat, sleep, fish, hike, sail… You can do all this without leaving Bells Marina and Resort, in South Carolina. Edging a spectacular cove on Lake Marion, the campground has waterside sites backed by 400 acres of woodland in the Santee Cooper Wildlife Management Area.
Known for its world-class fishing, Lake Marion is also a boater’s paradise; bring your own craft and keep it on the guest slips. The lake’s a wildlife haven too, where you can watch waterfowl, white herons and the occasional bald eagle from your site.
Open from 6am every day – so you can have a cooked breakfast and be out on the water or hiking in the woods at sunrise – Chrissy’s Dinner takes care of catering with a tasty all-day Southern menu. Caught fish in the lake? Chef will be happy to cook them for you.
If you’d rather get together with friends or family to dine in the privacy of your own accommodations, the restaurant crew runs a delivery service too. There’s also a shared cooking area with several barbecues and a pizza oven for outdoor eating.
Don’t fret if you’ve left something important behind at home, as the country store is stocked with groceries as well as with camping accessories, bait and tackle.
If you don’t feel like sailing or fishing, follow the hiking trails surrounding the resort, keeping a look out for deer, foxes and squirrels. Golfers, you’re in luck too, as there are six courses within a 15-minute drive.

Local attractions
Lake Marion is one of the top fishing destinations in South Carolina, where you can find striped bass, white perch, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, Arkansas blue catfish, shell crackers and bream. The state fishing record for largemouth bass was set here, and it’s not unusual to catch a 25-pound catfish right off the marina docks.
While there is much to keep you on the campground, there’s plenty to see in the local area too. Head into the Santee National Wildlife Refuge (35 minutes’ drive) to follow the Santee Cooper Nature Trail wildlife drive, or canoe through the marshland creeks. Take your binoculars when you explore Pine Island Unit National Wildlife Refuge (half an hour), where you’ll hopefully spy an abundance of herons, egrets and pelicans.
And if you all need a rejuvenating rest day, take the family to the sandy beach in Indian Bluff Recreation Park (10 minutes), where you can swim in pristine water, take boat trips around Lake Marion and picnic among the trees.
