- Peaceful 12-acre showground near the Albemarle Sound
- A mile from downtown Edenton; 90 minutes' drive from the Outer Banks
- Special events held at the park throughout the year
Hunker down for the night at American Legion Fairgrounds for days filled with trolley tours, riverside walks and watersports in northeastern North Carolina. Set about a mile from downtown Edenton, this 12-acre spot has all the room you could want for relaxation and chilled evening cook-outs; it’s also within a few minutes' walk of ace Albemarle Sound views.
Being a showground, this place plays host to events throughout the year like the Chowan County Regional Fair, an all-American attraction that takes place in the high season and includes old-time thrills like pig racing, beauty pageants, pie tasting and fairground rides. Holing up here the rest of the year is somewhat quieter, but there are lots of Edenton entertainment spots to keep your vacation ticking over within a short walk of the park.
When it comes to essential amenities, American Legion Fairgrounds sorts the basics like a chemical toilet and free wifi. The sheer amount of flat and grassy ground on offer here should also go a fair way in making your stays that little bit more relaxed. Barbecues are allowed too, so grab some grub at Edenton Farmers' Market in anticipation of fine weather.
Post-dinner, pootle around in Waterfront Park, admire the 19th-century Roanoke River Lighthouse and drink in the spectacular sundown scenes…

Local attractions
Stepping aboard a trolley tour in central Edenton is probably the easiest way of ticking off the many monuments scattered about the place. Over the course of your travels you'll drive past handsome historic buildings, with a top-rated guided commentary to put all the well-preserved colonial heritage into context. You can also glide more or less gracefully through the town harbour aboard a paddleboard or kayak, both of which are available to hire.
Escaping the city streets for the day is another option. Fond of long walks in the wilderness? Merchants Millpond State Park (40 minutes' drive) or Goose Creek State Park (an hour and 10 minutes) should see to that. Prefer picking your way around a set of pins and cups? Go golfing at Albemarle Plantation (25 minutes) or let loose on the links at Mulberry Hill (10 minutes).
Got sandals and suncream? Ship out to the Outer Banks, a sandy stretch of land that runs along North Carolina's Atlantic coast. The nearest big resort is Kitty Hawk (an hour and a half), where there are sizzling fish bars, boardwalks and acres of dog-friendly beaches.
