It's free, quick and easy!
- Large holiday park with marina on the banks of the St Lawrence River
- On the edge of the Thousand Islands archipelago
- Boats, kayaks, paddleboards and bikes available to rent
Thousand Islands – not just a tasty salad dressing, but also a rather gorgeous archipelago in the Saint Lawrence River, on the US-Canadian border. (In fact, with 1,864 of various shapes and sizes it’s rather closer to two thousand, but who’s quibbling?)
Settle in at Swan Bay Resort and you’ll be right on the riverside, with splendid watery views and direct access to the river via the fishing pier and the marina, where you can tie up your own boat or rent a pontoon boat, kayak or paddleboard for local exploration. Landlubbers who’d rather be by the water than on it can wander on wooded walking trails or rent fat tyre bikes to pedal about.
However you choose to roam, there’s much to see and do locally – castles, art galleries, wineries, golf and scuba diving being among the top picks. It’s also a short drive to/from Canada via Wellesley Island.
All at the park is set up for an easy life – paved roads give plenty of room for manoeuvre and there are plenty of useful facilities, including an on-site store and laundry room, as well as a large grocery store, liquor store and restaurants just outside the gates. There’s also a playground, a dog park and an outdoor pool with a tiki bar – with luck, something to please all members of the family.

Local attractions
If you’re fond of a tipple or two, there's much to sample nearby – it’s a five-minute drive to Thousand Islands Winery, or to Dark Island Spirits for craft gin, whiskey and other spirits. For a more comprehensive delve into the area’s grape products, hit the Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail.
Never visited a castle in the middle of a river before? Here’s your chance – take a trip to Boldt Castle, built on Heart Island by the former proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria, or board a boat to Singer Castle. Both are less than half an hour from the campground.
Cultural types may also like to swing by some of the area’s museums – the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 40 minutes away, perhaps, or the Antique Boat Museum, 15 minutes away.
