Safari or beach? Beach or safari? At Tanganyika Coastal Campsite, you don’t have to agonize over that choice, because this glamping oasis is located inside Saadani National Park – which happens to be the only wildlife park in Tanzania that borders the ocean. And indeed, a short walk (about 300 meters) through the fishing village of Saadani takes you to a spectacular sandy beach where sea turtles come to lay their eggs. Thanks to a limited number of accommodations, the campground feels peaceful, intimate and rather exclusive. The family safari tents have real beds (with mosquito nets and all the necessary bedding); natural materials and animal print dominate the decor in the living area; and there is a shower corner and electricity, too. Large windows enable you to keep an eye on camp business and passing animals, while drapes ensure that the rising sun doesn’t wake you up at the crack of dawn. Having said that, you might want to set the alarm to wake up early – for there is much to do around here, and the helpful folks at the site will be happy to arrange several activities for you, whether a game-viewing drive inside the national park, a walking safari led by an armed ranger, or a boat safari on the River Wami. Among the animals that call Saadani home are hartebeests, warthogs, and giraffes – plus the hippos, crocodiles, and flamingos that gather in and along the Wami. Buy something for the barbecue from a fisherman in the village, or, if you’d rather delegate cooking duties, try some of the specialties on offer at the on-park restaurant.

Local attractions

Pangani (two and three quarter hours’ drive), at the mouth of the river of the same name, was once a bustling Swahili trading center. These days you can stroll through its peaceful streets, checking out crumbling colonial structures, the old jail, and the former German administration building. The museum in Bagamoyo (five hours) displays exhibits from when the town was an important port trading slaves and ivory. Bagamoyo was also the capital of German East Africa, and German sites include the colonial administration headquarters and a graveyard. The remains of explorer David Livingstone were temporarily laid to rest in the Anglican Church before being transported to London. The seafront Kaole Ruins (five hours) include mosques, buildings, and tombs dating from between the 1200s and the 1500s. This Swahili settlement south of Bagamoyo was abandoned after the abolition of the slave trade.
