  • Well-equipped family site a 15-minute walk from the beach of Creixell
  • Tarragona 20 minutes’ drive; Vilafranca del Penedès 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; pool area with waterslides; activity programme
The Costa Dorada of northeastern Spain is yours to explore from Creixell Camping and Family Resort, a well-equipped spot in the small town of the same name (Creixell, that is), which is a 20-minute drive east of Tarragona. When this site tells you it’s a family resort, you’d better believe it; indeed, you might see very little of your children when you stay here, as they might be busy meeting new friends in the play area, testing the waterslide in the pool area or taking part in the activities organised by the kids’ club. Don’t worry, though: you shouldn’t feel too lonely or neglected. First of all, because your four-legged companion is unlikely to desert you the way the kids might. The site has a dog park so you can reward your buddy’s loyalty with a little off-the-lead action. Secondly, because there’s plenty to do for grown-ups, too – from tennis, basketball and pétanque, to an activity programme featuring fitness classes and entertainment. If you manage to gather the entire family, you might want to hire a bike and explore the coast. Then, of course, there’s the pool area, with plenty of sun loungers and grassy umbrellas… Meanwhile, those who want to swim in the Balearic Sea head to sandy Playa de Creixell, which is a 15-minute walk away (if you take the pedestrian bridge over the railway line) or a five-minute drive. An airy restaurant decorated with rattan furniture and plants serves Mediterranean dishes, and there are also several dining places within a five-minute walk of the resort.

Local attractions

There are pretty sea views from Tarragona’s Parc del Miracle, a garden overlooking the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre. The Circ Romà and the Muralla Romana fortifications are also part of the town’s ancient heritage. For something closer to modern times, check out the 19th-century interiors of Casa Canals and the collection at the Museo de Arte Moderno. Take the kids to PortAventura World (25 minutes’ drive), where the King Khajuna is an almost-vertical waterslide where they’ll travel from a height of 30 metres to a pool in a handful of seconds. There are less terrifying rides, too, including an indoor water park for younger children. Treat yourself to a trip to Vilafranca del Penedès (35 minutes) and VINSEUM: Museu de les Cultures del Vi de Catalunya. After learning all (or most of what) there is to know about local wine production, it’s time to hit the local wineries, many of which arrange cellar tours and tastings.
