If you find the scorching Spanish sun just a bit too blazing while on hol at Girona's Camping Esponellá, how in luck are you. Because it's only a drive of 15 minutes or so from this peaceful place to the famed waters of the Lake of Banyoles, the biggest natural lake in Catalonia. Such is the spectacular setting of this watery body that the 1992 Barcelona Olympics had its sailing events here, and the World Rowing Championships were held on the lake in 2004. You can of course mess about in boats on the waters by your very own self, by hiring a rowing vessel, taking a trip where someone else takes the tiller, or guiding yourself along in a canoe or kayak. (While keeping a watchful eye out for the Banyoles monster in the watery depths below, but of course…) On site, three pools – one outdoor and two indoor – are to hand for more water-based shenanigans, and a small river is alongside the grounds for fishing and paddling. Out of the water, there's miniature golf if you're feeling (slightly) active under the splendid Spanish sun, and volleyball, tennis or football to have a go at for the truly energetic. Inflatable games and toys are set up at the playground in summer. Sort a meal or takeaway at the site's Mediterranean restaurant or use the supermarket for a bit of what you fancy: either of these should be followed by a lingering drink at the Camping Esponellá bar, under the setting Spanish sun.

Disliked Not all pitches have large trees for shade - recommend bringing gazebo or sun shade. Just an advisory for anyone coming to visit !

Liked Camping familial animé mais calme le soir. Restauration sur place et canoe. Animations. Les réceptionnistes étaient très aimables et parlaient tous les 3 français, ce qui nous a bien aidés.
Aires de services camping-cars /caravanes très bien conçus: les eaux usées tout comme les toilettes chimiques , parfaits. Il y a de l'eau à proximité de chaque emplacement. Propreté des sanitaires au top. Les nouveaux étaient incroyables et les anciens très spacieux.
Pas loin, la porte de l'église d'Esponella est incroyable et la visite des restes du château vaut le détour même s'il n'en reste pas grand chose (à faire à pied). Le camping est proche de la ville de Figueres, où se trouve le musée théatre de Salvador Dali, incroyable en son genre.

Disliked Notre emplacement était trop petit , pour nous sa superficie devait avoisiner les 60 m2 alors qu'il était annoncé pour 90 m2. Mais il était bien ombragé.

Liked Si. Il camping è pulito. Tenuto bene. Le piscine hanno l'acqua troppo fredda. A parte una signora sono stati tutti molto carini. Il ragazzo alla reception è molto carino.

Liked El càmping es còmode, no massa gran, lavabos sempre a prop i força néts, activitats per tothom i rutes amb bici per fer amb nens a sortir del càmping. El personal molt simpàtic i atent.

Disliked Les instal·lacions son una mica velles. Les parcel·les de tenda no tenen separacions, tot i que ja ho posa al web, no va ser cap sorpresa.

Route directions

On the A7 take exit 3, signposted Figueres, and continue on the N260 following directions for Figueres-Besalu. After Navata, near the service station, turn left in the direction of Banyoles. At the crossroad after the bridge over Fluvia, turn right and follow the signposts for the campsite.

Local attractions

The spectacular waters of the Lake of Banyoles are lauded as the best place for watersports in all of Catalonia. Sailing, rowing, boat trips, canoeing and kayaking are all available at the lake; start off at the Club Natació  Banyoles or Banyoles Watersports Centre to see what's on offer all around. If you're not much for watersporting, you can cycle, hike, mountain bike or amble around the lake's perimeter, or lurk in its shoreside shrubbery for a birdwatching or nature spotting afternoon. Bike and Segways are available to hire, although possibly not the brightest idea if you're on a hidden birdwatching trip. Also much recommended are the medieval town of Besalú, 15 minutes' drive away, the Dalí Museum in Figueras, within 25, and the 40-minute drive to the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. Girona is about 35 minutes away and Barcelona an hour and a half.
